Job description

Key performance areas

1. Plan

  • Plan all maintenance activities in accordance with the strategic maintenance plans available on CMMS software (SAP system) to ensure systems of work, plant, and machinery are safe for use, pose no health hazards, and are readily available for operations.
  • Initiate strategic maintenance activities to enhance safety, health, and availability of systems, supporting Total Productive Maintenance and improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
  • Ensure electrical maintenance activities (Work Orders) are effectively scheduled with available resources.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure the correct quality and quantity of spares are available.
  • Plan leave, training, and development for subordinates aligned with departmental maintenance strategies.
  • Plan work execution in compliance with statutory requirements, utilizing OEM, RCM, 5Why, and RCA processes to improve plant reliability and availability. Maintain effective communication with departments via Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, and email.

2. Organise

  • Ensure the availability of adequate resources (personnel and materials) for work execution, in line with statutory requirements and asset management strategies.
  • Regularly review electrical work risk assessments for internal staff and contractors before work begins, enforcing safety rules to protect personnel and assets.
  • Maintain the functionality and availability of safety systems and electrical assets.
  • Organize spares management to support equipment reliability and availability.

3. Lead

  • Serve as the OHS Section 2.7 legal appointee and custodian for electrical installations across the NCP Chlorchem site.
  • Perform Job Task Observations, coaching and correcting behaviors that pose safety risks.
  • Participate in continuous 5S implementation, enforcing standards.
  • Promote good housekeeping practices.
  • Provide on-the-job training for senior artisans on supervision roles as second-in-charge personnel.

4. Control

  • Compile reports on daily work compliance by technicians and artisans.
  • Generate diagnostic reports on breakdown root causes and develop medium- to long-term prevention plans.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, standards, and audit actions for electrical personnel.
  • Manage asset care execution within budget constraints.
  • Collaborate with other departments and oversee spare parts management.

5. MV Network Operation

  • Review, approve, and oversee switching plans.
  • Maintain updated evidence portfolios for Operating Officials.
  • Ensure substation compliance.
  • Supervise MV switching according to approved plans.

6. Related SHERQ responsibilities

Knowledge / Skills / Competencies

  • Technical and supervisory knowledge in electrical installations within chemical processing plants.
  • Extensive knowledge of ISO 14001, 45001, 9001 standards.
  • Knowledge of SANS 10142 Part 1 and 2, and occupational health and safety standards.
  • SHERQ and safety work permit training.
  • Knowledge of area classification standards.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Digilex, and SAP CMMS.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, leadership qualities, team orientation, and strong communication skills.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years in engineering/maintenance management.
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 5 years working with MV/HV systems.
  • At least 3 years with emergency systems (generators, UPS).
  • Experience with rectifiers or large VSDs is advantageous.

Qualifications:

  • Wireman License
  • Master Installation Electrician Certification is advantageous.

Reporting structure:

This position reports to the Engineering Manager: E&I.
