Job description

Job Purpose

To undertake individually or as a member of the maintenance team the maintenance and upkeep of public rights of way in order to provide safe and convenient use by the public.

Job Context

Key outputs of the team / role and specific examples of role profile accountabilities include:

  • The driving of a 4x4 vehicle in accordance with current driving test standards and holding a current full ordinary driving licence.
  • Operating and carrying out daily maintenance of grass/hedge cutting machinery and all hand tools, with necessary licences.
  • Cutting back and clearing hedges and rough verges.
  • Felling small trees, tree branches, and removing sections of fallen trees.
  • Installing and fitting public rights of way posts and signage.
  • Installing and maintaining stiles, gates, bridges, steps, and fencing.
  • Constructing and maintaining paths and drainage systems.
  • Carrying out general ditching and site clearance operations.
  • Performing snow clearance operations and assisting with storm damage or flooding cleanup.
  • Conducting daily maintenance and basic checks of Rights of Way vehicles and machinery, including oil, water, tyres, and lights.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Practical experience in an appropriate work environment, with the ability to advise others on relevant issues (experience in rights of way, agricultural, countryside/grounds work).
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including risk assessments.
  • Safe and competent use of relevant equipment and tools, including driving a 4x4 vehicle, operating strimmers, chain/pole saws, and hand tools, with valid licences and certificates maintained.
