Job Description
A well-respected professional accounting practice that has served SMEs and individual taxpayers across SA for over 40 years is seeking a skilled Accounts / Audit Assistant. Some experience in auditing is preferable. If articles have been served, it will be considered advantageous.

Your knowledge and experience are required in the following areas:

  • Processing cash books and bank reconciliations
  • Receipts & payments and petty cash
  • Sales invoicing and debtors accounts
  • Purchases & expenses transactions and creditors accounts
  • General journal entries and their use, payroll records and how they enter the books of account
  • General ledger populating
  • Trial balances extraction
  • Income statements and statements of financial position
  • Internal controls and other sound business practices
  • Confidence to deal with a variety of clients in various roles from taking stock, recording and counting petty cash, physically inspecting assets to drafting financial statements.
  • Understanding trial balances
  • Age Analyses - Debtors and creditors and bank reconciliations
  • Some familiarity with taxes: personal and company


Requirements

  • At least 3 years accounting experience.
  • Accounting - academic background and practical experience with the ability to process transactions and extract at least to trial balance stage.
  • Ability and/or experience of drafting income statements and statements of financial position will be considered advantageous.
  • Clear understanding of the double-entry bookkeeping system, with experience in reconciling bank balances, creditors and debtors statements.
  • Understanding and experience of financial reporting periods, the need for journal entries and working with payroll and fixed asset registers.
  • Strong numerical ability.
  • Good command of the English language - verbal and written.
  • Computer literate as well as digitally-savvy.
  • Integrity and emotional intelligence.
  • Good sense of humour.
  • A curious self-starter.
  • MS Office essential - Excel and Word.
  • Ideally a graduate but can be self-taught (if sufficient work experience, a relevant and proven track record is required).
  • Maths at a HG level at school or tertiary subject is preferred.
  • Experience with accounting packages such as Pastel, Xero, Quickbooks, Sage Evolution is desirable.
  • Experience with management reporting packages such as Caseware, Auditmate, will be considered advantageous.

  • Understand that all pieces of work require accuracy and focus.

  • Should have no other current business interests (no moonlighting).

  • Planning; meticulous preparation; excellent execution; improving and following up where necessary.
  • Able to work in a time-driven environment (work is tracked in timesheets).
  • Must be ready to work beyond normal hours when necessary.
  • Ability to prioritise and deliver with accuracy and quality.
  • Must be precise about filing both hard copy and digital material.
  • Must have experience with payroll's EMP201 returns; VAT returns.
  • Income tax and e-filing.
  • Should understand what is meant by: Audit trail and Portfolio of Evidence.
  • Work will be predominantly based in-office, sometimes based at client premises (not remote/virtual).
  • Therefore: Must live within 15kms from Rosebank or in Sandton.
  • Must have a driver's license and ideally own car.
  • Must have own laptop (even though will not use personal laptop for work).
