Position Title: Grain Sourcing Specialist
Department: Procurement
Reports to: Procurement Manager
Grade: C 4
Location: Durban South Africa
Position Overview
Responsible for implementing grain procurement plans (maize), maintaining strong farmer relationships, and executing hedging activities within established guidelines to ensure consistent supply and cost management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Direct Sourcing Implementation
- Execute established direct-from-farm sourcing plans for grain commodities
- Coordinate direct-from-farm deliveries
- Develop and implement farmer engagement programs to increase direct supply base
- Negotiate purchase contracts and pricing with suppliers based on market conditions
- Implement pricing models within approved parameters
- Monitor and report on procurement performance
2. Supply Chain Coordination
- Balance direct-from-farm purchases with trader supply
- Coordinate direct-from-farm collections and grain logistics
- Monitor inventory levels
- Ensure compliance with grain quality standards and grading systems
- Report supply chain issues
3. Risk Management & Hedging
- Execute hedging activities on the SAFEX (South African Futures Exchange) within parameters defined by the Hedging Committee
- Monitor futures markets and report on market conditions
- Analyse basis levels and carrying charges to maximize procurement value
- Implement risk management procedures and policies
- Maintain hedging documentation
- Maintain and report on all hedge positions and transactions
- Report on hedge positions and effectiveness
- Recommend adjustments to Hedging Committee based on market conditions
4. Relationship Management
- Build and develop strong relationships with farming community, cooperatives, and other suppliers
- Organize and lead farmer meetings
- Maintain regular farmer communication
- Identify opportunities for relationship strengthening
- Provide market intelligence and price outlook to internal stakeholders and farmers
5. Quality Control & Compliance
- Maintain documentation including traceability and certification requirements
- Report quality issues
- Monitor basic compliance requirements
- Ensure compliance with grain quality standards and grading systems
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Supply Chain, or related field
- 3-5 years experience in grain procurement or agricultural commodities trading
- Understanding of commodity hedging fundamentals and SAFEX futures and options markets
- Knowledge of South African grain production systems, seasonal patterns, and quality standards
- Experience in trading and managing physical grain positions
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with agricultural producers
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly to farming regions
Skills and Competencies
- In-depth understanding of agricultural commodity markets and price risk management
- Proficiency in derivatives trading and hedging strategies
- Strong knowledge of South African grain industry and supply chains
- Ability to analyze market data and make informed trading decisions
- Excellent negotiation skills and commercial acumen
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and commodity trading/risk management software
- Ability to work under pressure and meet procurement targets
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
- Adaptability to changing market conditions
