Description

General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate protective service work protecting and serving the citizens, businesses, and property-owners of the City by preserving order and enforcing applicable Federal, State, and local laws.

Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Sergeant.

Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions
  1. Performs patrol duties, examines premises, investigates suspicious conditions and complaints, intervenes in domestic disputes, searches and collects evidence, makes arrests.
  2. Operates patrol vehicles and law enforcement equipment; communicates with dispatchers.
  3. Assists in investigating traffic crimes and enforces traffic laws.
  4. Participates in complex criminal investigations.
  5. Prepares reports and testifies in court.
  6. Acts as Animal Control Officer as needed.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable laws, firearms, law enforcement techniques, computer applications; good public relations, communication skills; ability to learn to operate law enforcement equipment; judge distances; interpret instructions; testify credibly; demonstrate leadership and teamwork; be committed to city mission and policies.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; no prior law enforcement experience required; associates/technical degree preferred. Employee is expected to acquire necessary skills within one year.

Physical Requirements

Must exert up to 50 pounds of force, work in various physical positions, and have good vision and hearing. Exposure to outdoor weather, chemicals, high places, and other hazards is possible. Use of protective equipment may be required.

Special Requirements

Graduation from a Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center is preferred; within one year of employment is required. Must meet annual certification requirements and have a valid driver's license.
