The Junior HR Generalist will provide comprehensive support to the HR department and assist in various human resources functions, including recruitment, onboarding, staff queries, payroll support, compliance with labour laws, and policies.
This role requires someone passionate about working in the non-profit sector and committed to supporting the organization's mission and values.
Role and Responsibilities
- Recruitment & Onboarding: Assist HR Business Partners with recruitment administration, schedule and conduct initial candidate screenings/interviews, coordinate interview schedules with hiring managers, welcome and settle candidates, conduct recruitment checks and references, assist with new employee onboarding (including paperwork and orientations), ensure compliance with policies, assist with offboarding, draft employment contracts, and keep records of contract terminations.
- Training & Staff Initiatives: Assist in organizing training sessions, workshops, and staff initiatives, maintain training records, liaise with external providers, and coordinate logistics for meetings and events.
- HR Administration & Compliance: Maintain employee records, ensure legal compliance, assist with HR reporting and audits, act as Employment Equity coordinator, manage staff queries, handle staff recognition platforms, distribute letters and payslips, take minutes, and assist with general admin duties.
- Payroll Support: Support payroll administration, verify source documents, manage leave records, assist managers with rostering and overtime, update payroll records, perform salary calculations, process payroll documents, and handle payroll queries.
- Other HR Support Functions: Promote organizational culture, prepare HR reports, organize employee engagement activities, represent HR in meetings, manage office supplies, organize documents for audits, welcome guests, and support health and safety policies.
- Performance Management: Support performance review processes, monitor employee performance issues, and assist in coordinating feedback sessions.
Qualifications and Education
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a Junior HR Generalist role
- Degree in Human Resources or Industrial Psychology
- Basic knowledge of South African labour laws and HR processes
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially
- Passion for working in a non-profit environment
