Company Description

As the Senior Surveyor you will be primarily responsible to supervise and measure the production targets set out in a survey area of responsibility, notifying operations regarding potential safety risks or transgressions of legal limits of the mining area.

Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.

Job Description

You will take on the responsibility to manage survey work which includes installation of control points for mining, measurement of volumes mined as well as establishing primary control networks.

More of your responsibilities will include:

  • Capturing of all operational activities within mine license area
  • Manage consumables as well as caring for equipment
  • Capturing and calculating of survey information which includes downloading and storing of data according to standards
  • Calculating surveyed points and recording of information according to standards as well as importing data to the CAD software
  • Calculating mine volumes and generating mining plans
  • Opencast production and rehab reports.
  • Installation of presplit and production holes pegs
  • Design of a drill and blast plans
  • Compilation of production reports, adhoc reports and advising on relevant legal requirements
  • Providing input to Survey Manager with regards to planning production results and figures
  • Drafting sectional plans, indication mining hazards
  • Drafting of hazard identification for approximated to Risk Assessment
  • Drafting of monthly and weekly production plans
  • Providing coaching, mentoring, and training to surveyors, assistants and learners

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science or equivalent
  • Diploma/ Degree in Mine Surveying
  • Advanced Survey Certificate
  • PLATO registration as Mine Survey Technician would be advantageous

Experience

  • Experience as a surveyor in the mining industry
  • CAD / MicroStation experience is essential
  • Experience in the opencast environment with specific reference to mining rehabilitation.
  • MicroStation, Surpac and Model Maker software knowledge
  • Drone licence would be an added advantage
  • Opencast experience is highly recommended
