About the Programmes

The Shoprite Retail Readiness Programme (RRP) and Youth Employment Services (YES) Programme empower South African youth (18–34) with retail skills and work experience.

RRP offers 7 weeks of training (5 weeks practical, 2 weeks theory) for an NQF Level 3 qualification.

YES provides 12 months of on-the-job training, requiring RRP completion, preparing participants for retail jobs or entrepreneurship.

These programmes address South Africa's 45.5% youth unemployment rate by equipping unemployed youth with retail skills, NQF Level 3 qualifications, and pathways to employment or business ownership, supporting economic transformation.

Key Responsibilities
  • RRP: Learn customer service, stock management, and cash handling; complete theoretical modules on retail operations; engage in practical training in Shoprite, Checkers, or Usave stores.
  • YES: Develop skills in inventory, merchandising, and business operations; contribute to store efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Participants
  • RRP: Achieve NQF Level 3 qualification, stipend up to R5,000 / month (YES), with 53% absorption into Shoprite jobs.
  • Employers: Skilled youth for retail roles, supporting transformation goals.
  • Community: Reduced unemployment, economic growth.
Eligibility Criteria
  • RRP: South African citizen, aged 18–34, Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent.
  • YES: Basic communication and teamwork skills; willingness to learn retail operations; adaptability and customer focus.
  • Preferences: Employment equity candidates (e.g., Black, Coloured, Indian); unemployed youth with no retail experience; commitment to completing the full programme.
Why Join the Programmes?
