Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Officer
Currently seeking an Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Officer for a leading FMCG company based in Cape Town.
The purpose of the position is to coordinate, support, and advise the business on all aspects regarding environment, health, and safety, and to establish, manage, and monitor standards, processes, communications, training, and systems to ensure all responsibilities associated with health, safety, and environment are adhered to.
Responsibilities
- Review & maintain the environmental, safety and health system: Ensure it's always updated.
- Coordinate safety and health preparedness: Drive readiness to all safety and health protocols.
- Manage contractors: Coordinate all contractors on site according to existing and new regulations.
- Conduct training and drills: Emergency drills, scenario-based training, and annual safety training plans.
- Inspections and hazard management: Regular workplace and equipment inspections to identify hazards, ensuring compliance and appropriate action.
- Incident management: Respond to concerns, investigate incidents, establish root causes, and report to authorities as required.
- PPE and safety awareness: Promote PPE compliance and conduct educational programs on occupational health & safety.
- Documentation and audits: Ensure SOPs, toolbox talks, risk assessments are completed; participate in SHE audits.
- Engagement with authorities: Liaise with regulatory bodies and auditors, providing necessary documentation.
Objectives
- Workplace safety committee: Establish, monitor, and drive performance, coordinate meetings, inspections, and incident reporting.
- Contractor safety management: Maintain safety files, inspect work permits, ensure adherence to policies, and perform risk assessments.
- Environmental, risk, and social assessments: Support ESG risk assessments, develop risk registers, and monitor mitigation efforts.
- Housekeeping and compliance: Maintain cleanliness, safety, and environmental standards, ensure adherence to legislation, and report unsafe conditions.
Experience & Qualifications
- Grade years' experience, preferably in FMCG environment, maintaining safety, health & environmental systems.
- At least 5 years' experience in safety processes and procedures in a factory setting.
