Job description

The Occupational Health Nurse will provide medical care, health advice, and wellness programs to employees, promoting a healthy and safe work environment. This role involves conducting medical assessments, developing health programs, and collaborating with management to prevent work-related injuries and illnesses. Employee will be required to work standby and overtime.

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE:
  1. Diagnosis and treatment of day-to-day illnesses.
  2. Monitoring and treatment of chronic illnesses within limits of legislation.
  3. Treatment of minor injuries sustained at home.
  4. Referral of employees and liaison with other health care agencies.
  5. Identify and diagnose employees with social problems and coordinate their treatment in line with company policy.
  6. Treatment of minor injuries on duty.
  7. Emergency treatment of serious injuries on duty.
  8. Referral of serious injuries on duty for medical attention.
  9. Promote a high standard of health for all employees.
  10. Liaise with the safety committee where possible.
  11. Participation in Emergency planning.
  12. Conduct regular walk-throughs of the premises.
  13. Participate in the identification, control and prevention of occupational hazards.
  14. Conduct monthly inspections of the ablutions, kitchen and canteen facilities and report to the client.
  15. Maintain updated MSDS reference file correlating with an updated list of HCS.
  16. Perform certificate of fitness screening interventions in accordance with the medical surveillance and / risk profile of client employees.
  17. Refer abnormal findings from medical surveillance to OMP.
  18. Participate in workplace assessments/site walkabout/inspections.
  19. Explain screening outcomes to clients.
  20. Ensure the accurate, legal-scientific recording of services as a continuing event on a continuous basis.
  21. General administration and budget management.
  22. Organisation of daily clinic routine.
  23. Adherence to the Scope of Services (Client contract).
  24. Keep records in accordance with legislation.
  25. Attend meetings and collect statistical data.
  26. Provide monthly professional reports to the client.
  27. Submit orders for medications, stationery, etc.
  28. Administer COID Act claims as required.
  29. Manage storage and control of medicines.
  30. Participate in cost-saving interventions and meet clinic budget targets.
  31. Ensure daily checks are carried out as per policies/procedures.
  32. Report faulty equipment to the Site Manager / Contracts Manager.
  33. Implement correct waste segregation.
  34. Participate in the orientation of new and locum personnel.
  35. Manage stock levels and report non-conformances.
  36. Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities and share best practices.
  37. Ensure compliance with procedures and regulatory requirements.
  38. Participate in annual clinic audits and review operations for quality standards.
  39. Implement national quality initiatives to improve clinical outcomes.
  40. Adhere to medical surveillance plans based on hygiene survey reports.
  41. Draft annual medical surveillance programs and ensure timely patient care.
  42. Attend to emergency cases and provide professional customer service.
  43. Maintain interpersonal relationships with staff and patients.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • BTech or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing.
  • Diploma or degree in Nursing.
  • Qualification in Primary Healthcare is advantageous.
  • 2-3 years experience in Primary Health and Occupational Health.
  • Registered and in good standing as a Professional Nurse with SANC.
  • Certificates in Audiometric and Hearing Assessment, Spirometry Testing, and Vision Testing.
Other Requirements:
  • At least 3 years mining-related experience.
  • Understanding of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and management abilities.
