Job description

The South African Sugar Association (SASA) has a permanent opportunity available for a Commodity Trader / Trading Manager based in Maydon Wharf, KwaZulu-Natal.

This role is part of the Sugar Markets and Logistics Division.

The division handles marketing, sales, and logistics related to South Africa's bulk raw sugar, focusing on maximizing net proceeds within acceptable risk levels. Raw sugar is sold to refineries in South Africa for export to regions including the Far East, Middle East, and the United States, either directly or through trade houses. Price risk is managed via hedging on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) US Futures No. 11. Exports are facilitated through SASA's terminals in Durban and Maputo, in which SASA is a shareholder.

We seek to appoint a Commodity Trader / Trading Manager, reporting to the Export and Logistics Executive, to provide specialized administrative support to the export program.

The successful candidate will manage all aspects of raw sugar export administration, including planning, pricing, trading, and freighting functions. A key focus will be to implement strategies that enhance SASA's reputation, increase revenue from exports, manage risks, and reduce costs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to the achievement of export strategies for SASA's raw sugar availability.
  2. Maintain productivity and performance standards, and implement improvements or training as needed.
  3. Develop detailed export plans for international markets, outlining critical deliverables and supporting actions.
  4. Ensure net proceeds from exports are optimized within acceptable risk levels, utilizing storage facilities effectively.
  5. Implement pricing strategies to maximize export proceeds.
  6. Provide accurate information for calculating the Recoverable Price (RV) paid to growers.
  7. Manage administrative reporting requirements to stakeholders.
  8. Maintain a positive reputation for SASA with a diverse range of contacts.
  9. Ensure accuracy and completeness of commercial information related to ship loading operations.
  10. Oversee the implementation of the Export Department's credit insurance policy.
  11. Ensure the quality of information reported adds value internally and externally, supporting key decisions in marketing and export planning.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A 3-year tertiary qualification in commerce, with management accounting as a major.
  • At least 5 years of experience in international logistics or freight handling.
  • Experience in treasury and export trading is advantageous.
  • South African nationality, with a clean credit and criminal record.
