A leading company in Gauteng is seeking a Senior Safety Officer to implement and manage SHEQ systems. Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of ISO standards preferred.

Introduction

The Senior Safety Officer is responsible for the implementation, management, and continuous improvement of the company's SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) systems.

This role ensures legal compliance, promotes a proactive safety culture, and maintains the security and environmental integrity of the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. SHEQ & Compliance Management
  • Ensure total SHEQ compliance and manage site security
  • Conduct regular internal audits, inspections, and HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment)
  • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs)
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents; implement preventative and corrective actions
  • Manage IOD (Injury on Duty) and COD (Case of Disease) claims, including liaison with medical and insurance providers
  • Coordinate on-site and off-site SHEQ training for staff and contractors
  • Ensure contractor safety compliance and conduct contractor inductions
  • Conduct plant safety walks with management
  • Oversee all legal appointments, ensuring all personnel are competent and trained
  • Maintain effective SHER communication and lead continuous improvement initiatives
  • Health & Safety Operations
    • Chair the Health & Safety Committee and lead monthly meetings
    • Issue and control work permits for employees and contractors
    • Ensure compliance with SHEQ legislation and company standards
    • Support Capex projects to ensure SHEQ compliance from initiation to implementation
    • Manage risk assessments and mitigation plans across the site
    • Coordinate procurement and stock control for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Conduct equipment safety inspections and maintain regulatory registers
    • Implement and monitor Environmental Management Systems
    • Be hands-on in driving safety initiatives and interventions
    Desired Experience & Qualifications
    • Grade 12 (Matric)
    • Minimum 5 years' experience in a similar role, preferably in FMCG or manufacturing
    • SAMTRAC certification
    • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office Suite
    • IMS Internal Auditor certification (advantageous)
    • Working knowledge of ISO , ISO , and ISO (preferred)
