Introduction
The Senior Safety Officer is responsible for the implementation, management, and continuous improvement of the company's SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) systems.
This role ensures legal compliance, promotes a proactive safety culture, and maintains the security and environmental integrity of the organization.
Duties & Responsibilities
- SHEQ & Compliance Management
- Ensure total SHEQ compliance and manage site security
- Conduct regular internal audits, inspections, and HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment)
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs)
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents; implement preventative and corrective actions
- Manage IOD (Injury on Duty) and COD (Case of Disease) claims, including liaison with medical and insurance providers
- Coordinate on-site and off-site SHEQ training for staff and contractors
- Ensure contractor safety compliance and conduct contractor inductions
- Conduct plant safety walks with management
- Oversee all legal appointments, ensuring all personnel are competent and trained
- Maintain effective SHER communication and lead continuous improvement initiatives
Health & Safety Operations- Chair the Health & Safety Committee and lead monthly meetings
- Issue and control work permits for employees and contractors
- Ensure compliance with SHEQ legislation and company standards
- Support Capex projects to ensure SHEQ compliance from initiation to implementation
- Manage risk assessments and mitigation plans across the site
- Coordinate procurement and stock control for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Conduct equipment safety inspections and maintain regulatory registers
- Implement and monitor Environmental Management Systems
- Be hands-on in driving safety initiatives and interventions
Desired Experience & Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a similar role, preferably in FMCG or manufacturing
- SAMTRAC certification
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Office Suite
- IMS Internal Auditor certification (advantageous)
- Working knowledge of ISO , ISO , and ISO (preferred)
