Main Purpose

The Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring organizational adherence to SHE-related regulatory and certification frameworks, including ISO (Occupational Health & Safety Management System), ISO (Environmental Management System), POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act), and PAPIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act).

This role focuses on compliance verification, certification maintenance, and ensuring that the SHE Operations department effectively implements and maintains day-to-day requirements.

The officer will conduct audits, manage certification processes, perform risk assessments, and oversee regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  1. SHE Management System Implementation & Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the SHE management system in alignment with ISO standards, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and evaluate compliance with OHSA, MHSA, and other relevant regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with POPIA and PAPIA regarding SHE-related data and documentation.
  1. Certification & Audit Management
  • Prepare for and conduct internal and external audits for ISO, POPIA, and PAPIA certifications.
  • Identify non-conformities, implement corrective actions, and maintain certification compliance.
  1. Risk Management & Incident Investigation
  • Conduct risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and investigate workplace incidents.
  1. Audits, Inspections & Compliance Monitoring
  • Conduct internal audits, support external audits, and ensure adherence to legal and certification requirements.
  1. Training, Awareness & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Develop training programs, conduct awareness sessions, and collaborate with departments to embed SHE considerations.
  1. Document Control & Performance Reporting
  • Maintain accurate records, monitor performance metrics, and prepare management reports.
  1. Continuous Improvement & Industry Best Practices
  • Stay updated on ISO revisions, regulations, and industry trends; implement improvement initiatives.
Minimum Requirements

Education

  • ISO Lead Auditor or Implementer Certification
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate or equivalent
  • SAMTRAC or similar occupational health & safety certification
  • Certification in POPIA compliance (e.g., CIPP)

Experience

  • At least 3 years conducting ISO compliance audits
  • Minimum 5 years in SHE compliance in manufacturing or industrial environment
  • At least 3 years managing certification audits
  • Minimum 2 years developing SHE compliance training

Additional Skills include auditing, risk assessment, incident investigation, policy development, training, documentation, and stakeholder engagement.
