Job description

Our client based in Isando, Johannesburg, is seeking a BIM Specialist to join their team.

Purpose of the Role:

The BIM Specialist will oversee the successful implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes for the company's operational facilities. The role involves supporting the Senior BIM, Drawing Office, and Technical Standards Manager (multi-role) "BDOTS."

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, publish, and implement BIM standards, protocols, and processes based on best practices. Establish company-specific drawing naming conventions aligned with ISO standards and manage a centralized drawing repository for the company's DC facilities, including historical, new, and operational projects.
  2. Train team members and relevant stakeholders in BIM use, standards, protocols, processes, and best practices relevant to their roles.
  3. Review, coordinate, and verify models and design data to ensure conformity with company BIM standards and best practices. Manage BIM Digital Twins and data sets handed over by IDEV or IM Departments.
  4. Facilitate collaboration among colleagues, external consultants, and clients to resolve technical issues via the company's BIM ecosystem, maintaining data fidelity.
  5. Coordinate with internal teams and external architects to ensure as-built data accuracy for existing facilities, especially when changes occur post-handover.
  6. Work with Document Controllers to ensure smooth migration of as-built and handover data between BIM environment and the company's O&M SharePoint Hub.
  7. Establish processes with infrastructure management to ensure adherence to BIM policies (OIR, PIR, BEP) to maintain data integrity across the organization.
  8. Implement BIM workflows to manage collaboration among departments.
  9. Evaluate and adopt new BIM tools and techniques for continuous improvement, aiming for ISO 19650 certification and maintaining compliance.
  10. Monitor and report on BIM process performance monthly to aid in ongoing improvements.
  11. Assist in propagating BIM best practices, protocols, and policies throughout the supply chain.
  12. Support the Drawing Office in architectural design and coordination, especially during resource shortages or urgent needs.

Skills Required:

  • Proven experience in the core functions of the role.
  • Strong knowledge of BIM standards, protocols, and best practices.
  • Understanding of linking models from various resources and stakeholders.
  • Leadership and project management skills for building BIM systems.
  • Attention to detail, technical skills, active listening, independence, teamwork, self-motivation, professionalism, patience, and adaptability under pressure.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Professional Architectural Technologist (B.Tech Arch Tech) or equivalent engineering qualification.
  • Certification in Autodesk CAD software, with at least 5 years’ experience with Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), and BIM360.
  • Autodesk Certified Instructor or experience in training Autodesk products, including BIM.
  • 2-3 years management experience, collaborating across teams/departments.
  • Familiarity with international BIM best practices.
