We have an exciting opportunity for a Master Welder. The purpose of this role is to Maintain maintenance operations on HME/Plant equipment and machinery and guide Artisans on quality, safety, and problem-solving to reach production and productivity targets.

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As our Master Welder your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Safety, Health, and Environment
    • Adhere to all health and safety practices and requirements.
    • Promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where team members can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
    • Exemplify all relevant safety standards and procedures as a positive example for learners to follow and prioritise in their work practices.
    • Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Equipment and Machinery Maintenance:
    • Ensure effective equipment and related machinery maintenance for optimal availability to maximise production and ensure schedule compliance.
    • Identify and report defects, equipment failures and time required for repair to the Supervisor to enable applicable decision-making, action planning and problem resolution.
    • Perform high-level fault finding, generate alternatives and suggest economically viable options for optimal equipment availability.
    • Execute work as per Operating Model standards and procedures.
    • Complete job cards thoroughly and return them on time.
    • Keep all toolboxes and tools clean and sound.
    • Ensure proper communication and handover of outstanding tasks between shifts and dayshift teams.
  • Continuous improvement:
    • Keep up to date with innovations in equipment and methodologies, evaluate and align them with operational requirements to ensure continuous improvements.
    • Provide leadership on reporting of events and hazards.
  • Maintenance Efficiency:
    • Improve maintenance efficiency by ensuring Artisans and related stakeholders are always fully versed with critical equipment, requirements, settings, and SOPs.
    • Ensure installations, commissioning of infrastructure and post-installation work testing for functionality are executed following specifications to meet deadlines.
    • Continuously monitor maintenance progress and related preparation activities against ad hoc jobs to meet operational targets, minimise downtime, enable timely reporting and enhance equipment efficiency.
  • Artisan Training, Development and Assessment:
    • Identify and utilise on-the-job learning opportunities to achieve required competency levels.
    • Check the quality of work done by Artisans and provide training and development to address deficiencies.
    • Give feedback to the supervisor to ensure Artisan's competence.
    • Proactively advise concerned parties on maintenance-related matters aligned with best practices and within agreed-upon timeframes to avoid possible problems.
    • Ensure that learners under supervision adhere to all relevant safety standards and procedures.
  • Assistance and Practices:
    • Assist supervisor and co-workers when required within company policies, procedures, and guidelines to enhance teamwork objectives.
    • Provide advice in all maintenance-related matters and tactics to concerned parties proactively aligned with best practices and within agreed-upon timeframes to avoid possible problems and uplift the competence base.

This role is in the Engineering & Maintenance (ENG) Department at a band J3. The role reports to the Engineering Supervisor

Qualifications
  • Grade 12/N3 Technical
  • Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Studies on NQF4.
  • Trade Certificate as Welder/Plater
  • SA Drivers Licence

Technical Knowledge

  • Possessing 5 years of experience as a Welder/Plater.
  • Demonstrating awareness of safety standards.
  • Familiarity with company policies and procedures.
  • Understand the specific functionality of the discipline's equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Competence in technical assessment.
