Introduction
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Pavement Engineer to join our team at the Sunninghill office in Johannesburg.
The ideal candidate will hold a minimum of a B Sc. or B Eng. Degree in Civil Engineering, complemented by a post-graduate qualification in Pavement Studies. Professional Registration as an Engineer (Pr Eng.) is a prerequisite for this role. The successful candidate will bring a minimum of 8 years of relevant post-professional registration experience in a consulting engineering environment.
Proficiency in Elmod and Rubicon, advanced Excel skills, and a working knowledge of FIDIC conditions of contract are essential. The candidate should have a proven track record in managing new pavement, reseal, and rehabilitation projects. In addition to technical expertise, excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment are crucial for success in this role.
The Senior Pavement Engineer must be willing to work in the field and possess a valid driver's license.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and Analysis: Develop and analyze pavement designs to ensure they meet safety and performance standards, considering factors such as traffic loads, soil conditions, climate, and material specifications.
- Material Selection: Choose appropriate materials for pavement construction, evaluating asphalt, concrete, or other specialized materials based on durability, strength, and cost-effectiveness.
- Construction Oversight: Supervise and inspect pavement construction projects to ensure compliance with design specifications and quality standards, monitoring the placement and compaction of materials.
- Maintenance Planning: Develop plans for pavement maintenance and rehabilitation, assessing existing conditions, recommending repairs, and prioritizing projects based on budget.
- Quality Control: Implement measures to ensure constructed pavements meet safety, durability, and functionality standards.
- Testing and Evaluation: Conduct laboratory and field tests on pavement materials to assess properties such as density, strength, and skid resistance.
- Traffic Analysis: Evaluate traffic patterns and loads to design pavements capable of withstanding expected volumes and types of traffic.
- Budgeting and Cost Estimation: Prepare cost estimates considering materials, labor, equipment, and methods, working within budget constraints.
- Environmental Considerations: Incorporate sustainability, recycling, and environmental impact mitigation into design and construction.
- Documentation: Prepare detailed reports, specifications, and maintain accurate records of all project activities.
- Client and Stakeholder Interaction: Communicate effectively with clients, government agencies, and contractors to discuss requirements and address concerns.
- Continuous Learning: Stay updated on advancements in pavement engineering through professional development and research.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Minimum B Sc. or B Eng. Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Post-graduate qualification in Pavement Studies is advantageous.
- Professional Registration as an Engineer (Pr Eng.) is required.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience in a consulting environment, including design and contract documentation.
- Competency in Elmod and Rubicon.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Working knowledge of FIDIC conditions of contract.
- Experience in pavement projects such as new construction, reseal, and rehabilitation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work under pressure.
