Job description

Our client is on the lookout for a passionate and professional Field Guide to join a highly regarded safari team committed to delivering world-class immersive guest experiences. This role is about more than just game drives; it’s about guiding with purpose. Our client’s Field Guides are central to shaping each guest’s connection with the natural world through personalised, ethically led, and environmentally conscious experiences that align with international best practices.

We’re seeking someone who brings a high level of humility, professionalism, and adaptability, ensuring every safari is not only unforgettable but also educational and respectful of the environment. A strong focus on lifelong learning and self-development is key; staying up to date with the latest guiding standards, knowledge, and guest engagement strategies is part of the ethos. In addition to delivering exceptional guest experiences, you’ll also be responsible for the care and upkeep of safari vehicles and equipment, clear communication with lodge teams, and a consistent commitment to operational excellence in the field.

Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver exceptional individualised safari experiences that meet and exceed guest expectations.
  2. Represent the strong values and standard of excellence through warm, attentive hosting.
  3. Demonstrate uncompromising sensitivity to the natural environment, championing sustainable guiding practices.
  4. Prioritize the safety of guests, staff, and wildlife at all times.
  5. Collaborate closely with Front of House and other departments to create a seamless guest journey.
  6. Maintain vehicles and safari equipment to the highest operational standards.
  7. Complete all guiding-related administration accurately and in a timely manner.
  8. Engage in ongoing personal education and contribute to the development of fellow team members.
  9. Uphold and embody the spirit of teamwork, recognising that excellence is achieved collectively.
Requirements:
  • At least 3 years guiding experience in a high-end lodge environment.
  • Accredited with a CATHSSETA NQF2 or NQF4 Nature Site Guide qualification (both theory and practical components completed).
  • Registered as a guide with the National Department of Tourism (NDT).
  • Valid Trails Guide Certificate VPDA (View Potentially Dangerous Animals).
  • SASSETA Firearms Proficiency Certificates (for guiding in areas requiring rifle competency).
  • Valid South African Code 8 Driver’s License with Public Driver’s Permit (PDP).
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, and interpersonal skills.
  • A deep passion for wildlife interpretation and conservation.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with energy and initiative.
  • Adaptable and innovative, able to adjust plans dynamically in the interest of guest experience.
  • Confident, humble, and consistently professional in appearance and conduct.
  • A true team player committed to the collective success of the lodge and its staff.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and time management.
  • A mentoring mindset eager to contribute to the development of fellow guides and junior staff.
Education:

Accredited with a CATHSSETA NQF2 or NQF4 Nature Site Guide qualification (both theory and practical components completed). Registered as a guide with the National Department of Tourism (NDT). Valid Trails Guide Certificate VPDA (View Potentially Dangerous Animals). SASSETA Firearms Proficiency Certificates (for guiding in areas requiring rifle competency).
