Job description

Requirements :

  • Grade 12 plus an appropriate qualification that allows registration as an independent Practitioner. No experience required after registration as a Medical Registrar. Must have completed Post Community Service. Registration with HPCSA for the financial year 2025/26. The requirements to graduate as a General Surgeon and the award of the MMed degree will be determined by the Academic Department of Surgery. The following will be an added advantage: General Surgery Primaries from the College of Surgeons of South Africa, ATLS and Basic Surgery Skills Course. Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident. Proof of current HPCSA registration. Duration of training is up to 5 years and no extension of the contract will be allowed. To graduate as a General Surgeon, a junior rotation of 2 years must be completed and a further 3 years as a senior registrar will be mandatory. The requirements to graduate as a General Surgeon and the award of the MMed degree will be determined by the Academic Department of Surgery.

Duties :

  • Provide clinical care of all surgical patients. Participate in all activities of the discipline in relation to teaching and research, participate in departmental audit activities, prepare and write reports. Supervise junior doctors (undergraduate students, interns and community service doctors). Attend relevant administrative meetings like mortality meetings. Completing MEDICO Legal Documents timeously (e.g. death reports).Participate in departmental meetings, journal clubs, case presentations, lectures and ward rounds. Ensure effective administration and secure record keeping in the department. Rendering of after-hour (night, weekend and public holiday) duties to provide continuous uninterrupted care of patients. The incumbent will be rotated through related departments at various hospitals that are teaching hospitals for the University of Pretoria including outreach programmes.

Registrars will be required to rotate between the different institutions. Preference will be given to South African citizens. The performance of normal and commuted overtime is not mandatory, however it will be based on the operational needs of the hospitals.
