Job description

Special Needs Teaching Assistant

  • Full-time contracts
  • Mainstream Primary Schools
  • East London
  • £90.00 - £115 per day

We are currently recruiting Special Needs Teaching Assistants to work on a full-time basis in SEND specialist schools across East London.

We have full-time Special Needs Teaching Assistant opportunities in primary schools supporting children and young people with a range of learning and development needs, including Autism, PMLD, and Behavioural Needs (SEMH).

Autism

As a Teaching Assistant in a primary school for students with Autism, you will support students across various learning and development activities. Students with autism can vary significantly in cognitive ability, so an adaptable and confident attitude is essential. You will need to build relationships quickly, establish routines with a consistent approach, communicate clearly in suitable ways, and incorporate pupils' interests.

Behavioural Needs (SEMH)

Schools for students with behavioural, social, emotional, and mental health needs provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that is adaptable to meet each student’s needs. As a Teaching Assistant, you will support students in developing their daily and academic skills, building self-esteem, and regulating emotions. Students may display challenging behaviour, and staff are provided with training to manage and de-escalate situations. This role is ideal for those who want to make a difference and support young people towards a healthy and happy future.

While understanding of SEN is helpful, many of our Teaching Assistants gain experience on the job with training and guidance from teachers and school leaders in their placements.

Requirements
  • Commitment to full-time positions (8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday) for the full academic year starting September 2025.
  • Applications from: Experienced Teaching Assistants, Healthcare/social care workers, Youth workers, Community support workers.
  • Enhanced DBS certificate (assistance available if needed) and two references covering the past two years.
  • A caring, dedicated, and professional approach to working with young children with special educational needs.
