Job description

WSP is committed to a culture driven by safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Primarily, the role requires support and leadership to the Mine Closure Team. Raise the profile of the team within the mining industry and improve project backlog. Enhance the ability to deliver quality on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities :
  1. Deliver leading closure practice consulting services to internal and external clients in South Africa, Africa, and globally.
  2. Contribute complex technical solutions to the Mine Closure practice and develop innovative approaches and techniques.
  3. Mentor and grow the Mine Closure team.
  4. Lead transdisciplinary project teams on local, regional, and international closure consulting projects, ensuring safety, timeliness, budget adherence, and compliance with international standards.
  5. Coordinate teams to develop proposals and deliver projects successfully.
  6. Collaborate with other senior members of the WSP Mining team to implement business growth strategies and maintain client relationships.
  7. Work with specialists to provide technical input on closure planning, including devising closure criteria for waste residue facilities, contaminated land rehabilitation, and mine water treatment.
  8. Compile and integrate reports, spreadsheets, and drawings into final deliverables.
  9. Make project decisions and manage junior staff to execute tasks effectively.

  • Model SHEQ standards and promote a safe working environment.
  • Identify SHEQ risks and implement processes to achieve Zero Harm.
  • Uphold company values and ensure safety at all times.
Key Competencies and Skills :

Demonstrable closure experience and deep knowledge of the mining sectors in South Africa and Africa, especially in rehabilitation and closure. Additional competencies include:

  • Leadership and mentorship skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to integrate multidisciplinary expertise into closure deliverables.
  • Technical writing proficiency.
  • Experience in client engagement and representing the company.
Job Experience :
  • At least 15 years in Mine Closure and environmental management; additional experience is a bonus.
  • Proven leadership in high-performing teams.
  • Experience in developing client relationships and contributing to business growth.
  • Experience in sectors like mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, and energy is advantageous.
  • Experience in South Africa and other African countries is preferred.
Qualifications :
  • BTech / BEng / BSc in mining, environmental management, or engineering.
  • BSc or BTech in Quantity Surveying.
  • Landscape Architect (BScLArch, BL(Hons), or ML(Prof)).
  • BSc(Hons) in spatial or geographical sciences.
  • Minimum 15 years relevant experience in mine rehabilitation and closure planning, including environmental aspects.
Other Requirements :
  • Driver's license.
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel abroad.
