Job description

JOB PURPOSE
The efficient designing of machinery and equipment as required by the Company.

KEY WORK OUTPUTS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Receives request for design together with date due (for design to be submitted in final form and/or for delivery, installation, and commissioning of final product).
  2. Analyses and interprets request.
  3. Inspects Development Engineering records and foreign drawings to avoid duplication and to obtain useful hints and ideas from jobs done previously.
  4. Inspects proposed site, adjoining machinery etc.
  5. Studies relevant literature.
  6. Collects and interprets all other available pertinent information.
  7. Plans work in broad outlines.
  8. Visits other factories, suppliers, and other places where additional information may be obtained.
  9. Collects material samples and submits them for analysis where necessary.
  10. Interprets results and their relevance.
  11. Liaises with other departments and external service providers as to availability, quality, prices, delivery and other time scheduling of services, materials, labour, etc.
  12. Interviews Plant Engineer and other people concerned with final product and its function in relation to their special requests.
  13. Revises plan accordingly.
  14. Prepares rough design.
  15. Undertakes independently all necessary engineering calculations to ensure that designs comply with any relevant safety requirements.
  16. Records every result, information, offer etc. in job file.
  17. Proposes course of action.
  18. Submits proposal for approval.
  19. Finalises overall design and submits for approval.
  20. Finalises detail design.
  21. Prepares final drawings and material lists and if necessary, co-ordinates the work of project specific draftsmen from time to time as & when required.
  22. Finalizes all Development Engineering office records relating to the job.
  23. Submits final drawings, material, and other records for checking.
  24. Issues prints.


KEY WORK OUTPUTS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Prepares specification documentation for obtaining quotations where required from external service providers.
  2. Advises engineer responsible of the outcome.
  3. Follows up on deliveries with suppliers.
  4. Inspects product during and at the end of manufacturing process as to compliance with drawings.
  5. Assists in preparation of operating instructions.
  6. Assists during installation and commissioning with hints and information gained during designing.
  7. Checking work is undertaken as part of the preparation leading up to promotion as a drawing office checker.
  8. Ensures that all drawings are capable of one interpretation only by persons not familiar with the reading of drawings. A drawing is a visual means of communication.


QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential:
  1. Diploma – Draughtsmanship / Mechanical Engineering / related technical field (essential).
  2. Degree - Draughtsmanship / Mechanical Engineering / related technical field (Advantageous).

EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
  1. Two years’ experience as an artisan plus six years in a drawing office incorporating detail, overall design and draughting.
