Introduction: To be multi-skilled in the Donation Testing Department to perform routine testing and where required second line / confirmatory testing for Blood Grouping (including but not limited to ABO, Rh, Irregular antibody screen, antibody identification, allo-agglutinin titre and syphilis testing), Virology (including but not limited to serological testing for HIV, HCV, HBV), biochemical testing for Serum Ferritin and Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (including but not limited to HBV DNA, HIV and HCV RNA). The role requires skills and knowledge of different technical principles such as molecular, chemistry, immunohematology etc. across all testing sections requiring competency across multiple testing systems / automated platforms.

Responsibilities:

1. Ensure operational objectives in the Blood Grouping Section are realised.
2. Receive, check and prepare samples for testing according to SOP and IPA criteria.
3. Prepare Blood Grouping instrumentation and reagents for testing in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
4. Perform automated testing according to SOP and ISC criteria for all donors.
5. Run reports, select samples and perform automated repeat blood group testing of samples with anomalous first line results.
6. Perform second line / repeat testing of samples with anomalous results.
7. Enter results (ABO and Rh) into eProgesa.
8. Send samples with anomalous blood grouping results to Red Cell Serology laboratory.
9. Check results for control failures.
10. Report all errors and breakdowns to relevant Head of Lab.
11. Perform testing for validations, projects and pre-batch testing as requested.
12. Perform automated Rh and Kell Phenotyping.
13. Perform automated antibody screening and antibody identification.
14. Ensure operational objectives in the Virology Section are realised.
15. Prepare Virology instrumentation and reagents in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
16. Perform automated virology screening on all blood donations.
17. Select samples and perform automated repeat viral testing.
18. Perform automated Serum Ferritin screening.
19. Check results for control failures.
20. Report all errors and breakdowns to the technical specialist / Head of Lab.
21. Perform testing for validations, projects and pre-batch testing as requested.
22. Ensure operational objectives in the NAT Section are realised.
23. Prepare NAT instrumentation and reagents in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
24. Perform routine automated Molecular assays.
25. Select samples and perform automated repeat molecular testing.
26. Work NAT night shift or early morning shift as required.
27. Liaise with Service engineer after hours.
28. Check results for control failures.
29. Report all errors and breakdowns to relevant Head of Lab.
30. Ensure instrument and Laboratory Maintenance has been accomplished.
31. Perform scheduled maintenance in all 3 sections on different instruments.
32. Keep accurate records of maintenance performed.
33. Dispose of samples and waste according to regulations.
34. Quality compliance has been achieved.
35. Test internal and external quality controls and proficiency panels.
36. Contribute to SOP compilation.
37. Complete GLP and statistics worksheets daily.
38. Comply with health and safety requirements.
39. General administrative functions have been carried out.
40. Assist with stock checks and packing of stock.
41. Perform other job-related duties as required.
42. Assist in Quality and Projects section during staff leave.
43. Attend and contribute to department meetings.
