Job description

Job Title: Divisional Fire Officer

Job Description:

The Divisional Fire Officer in a fire department is a senior management role responsible for overseeing fire operations within a specific geographic area or division. The job involves both administrative and operational responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Operational Oversight:

  • Supervise fire operations within the assigned region.
  • Ensure fire engines and other emergency vehicles are well-maintained and operational.
  • Coordinate firefighting operations during emergencies, including large-scale fires, natural disasters, and other crises.
  • Ensure fire safety protocols are followed during emergency response activities.

2. Personnel Management:

  • Supervise a team of firefighters, fire officers, and support staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide training and development opportunities.
  • Ensure that all personnel are compliant with health and safety standards.
  • Address personnel issues, including discipline, promotions, and workforce scheduling.

3. Training and Development:

  • Organize and oversee ongoing training programs to ensure that staff are equipped with up-to-date skills and knowledge.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training and suggest improvements.
  • Ensure that personnel are familiar with the latest firefighting techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.

4. Administrative Duties:

  • Prepare reports and documentation on fire incidents, resource allocation, and personnel performance.
  • Oversee record-keeping, incident reporting, and compliance with local, municipal, and national fire safety regulations.

5. Community Outreach:

  • Collaborate with local government agencies and community organizations to improve public safety.
  • Respond to community concerns regarding fire risks or safety issues.

6. Liaison:

  • Act as the liaison between local municipal fire department, and other emergency services (police, medical, etc.).
  • Participate in interagency training exercises and disaster response coordination.


Key Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Four-year Tertiary Diploma in Fire Technology National Diploma in Fire Technology or Associate Diploma in Fire Technology or Level 4 in Fire Science, Operations, Fire Safety and Management.
  • Minimum 7 years Supervisory experience as a Station Commander or in an equivalent position level.
  • Firefighting certifications, such as Fire Officer I, II, or III, Pump Operator, Vehicle Rescue, Rope Rescue, Incident Management and other relevant certifications.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills. Ability to work under pressure and manage large teams in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work in both office settings (for administrative tasks) and field environments (during fire incidents or training).
