Job Description

An exciting position has arisen within the Foschini Division for a Designer. This individual will be responsible for designing ranges and working alongside the production team to ensure the successful launch of ranges in store. We are seeking a responsible, organized individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment where the customer is the central focus.

The designer’s role will involve guiding all steps of the design process, from initial conception to final manufacturing across all commodities. A strong understanding of trend direction, garment construction, designing within cost constraints, product relevance, and branding is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Create the look and feel for seasonal merchandise based on global trends and lessons learned, including silhouette, styling, fabric, print, and colour direction. Must have a commercial eye and interpret international trends for the customer.
  2. Incorporate brand handwriting and personality into the ranges.
  3. Brief graphic designers and external teams on trend and branding direction.
  4. Present and develop key items for the Foschini retail team for upcoming seasons, considering key platform fabrics and price points.
  5. Monitor weekly sales and ongoing development throughout the season to ensure the brand remains relevant and aligned with consumer demand.
  6. Provide comprehensive and technical CAD drawings and tech packs to ensure relevant and cost-effective products.
  7. Offer test options to establish new product categories and iterate on existing lines.
  8. Regularly update buying teams with trend information that is aspirational and brand-appropriate.
  9. Manage the design process throughout the critical path, from briefing patternmakers to working closely with internal teams to ensure effective sample execution.
  10. Ensure all garments purchased meet quality and cost expectations of the retail customer.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Tertiary qualification in Fashion Design.
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in a design role.
  • Experience with manufacturing and suppliers is advantageous.
  • Practical knowledge of garment construction, fabrics, and trims.
Skills

  • Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Microsoft Office.
