Design Office Manager

New opportunity with an engineering company for a Design Office Manager (Waste Water) to oversee the design office and engineers, ensuring quality and timely project delivery.

Job Purpose:

Responsible for developing and executing strategies to design and produce drawings and fabrication (FAB) drawings for equipment sold in the marketplace. Ensure all designs, drawings, and specifications meet quality standards and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Manage the Design Office and engineers, including technical review of drawings before submission to procurement and manufacturing.
2. Assign design tasks and clarify project specifications.
3. Develop 3D models and assemblies using CAD software (SolidWorks), and prepare detailed fabrication drawings and specifications for mechanical equipment.
4. Resolve workshop fabrication issues as needed.
5. Review and critique proposals, plans, or designs related to wastewater treatment equipment.
6. Modify and revise designs to address operational deficiencies or reduce production issues.
7. Perform or review design calculations, conduct fault finding, and implement corrections.
8. Monitor workshop progress and quality control during equipment fabrication.
9. Create equipment Bill of Materials (BoM), Bill of Fabrication (BoF), and assign part numbers.
10. Develop prototypes and conduct testing (R&D).
11. Ensure compliance of designs with specifications and standards, including ISO requirements.
12. Visit sites to measure physical dimensions and observe system malfunctions, providing technical solutions.
13. Update project schedules, ensuring they are realistic and challenging.
14. Report on project progress and deliverables.
15. Communicate with project managers, workshop managers, supply chain, procurement, and clients to understand and meet project needs.
16. Manage the performance and professional development of the design team.
17. Develop KPAs, policies, and procedures for the design department.
18. Delegate work effectively and manage workflow within the office.
19. Identify training needs and develop departmental procedures.
20. Assign new jobs received from sales and project managers to the design team.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
• Proficient in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
• Proficient in MS Office and Outlook.
• Understanding of engineering and design principles.
• Experience in the wastewater industry (3-5 years preferred).
• Previous managerial experience.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Proactive, creative, with strong problem-solving abilities.
• Attention to detail and time management skills.
