Job summary

A leading media organization is looking for an Editorial Manager to assist in managing the Coastal team. You will handle the editing and publication of news articles, ensuring quality and adherence to standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive editorial experience, strong digital media understanding, and proven leadership abilities. This role is located in South Africa, Wes-Kaap.

Qualifications

  • 6-9 years editorial experience in an established newsroom.
  • Newsroom management experience preferred.
  • Experience in a digital environment is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Edit submitted news copy to meet quality and style standards.
  • Rewrite news story intros and angles for appeal.
  • Assist head of news with event identification and evaluation.
  • Assign stories to reporters with clear briefings.
  • Debrief reporters during or after the editing process.
  • Produce a comprehensive daily news diary.
  • Report and investigate news stories as needed.
  • Stay updated on local and national news.

Overview

To assist in the management of News24’s Coastal team by effectively managing the delegation, editing and publication of news from across the country’s coastal provinces.

Minimum Requirements
  • Relevant tertiary qualification;
  • 6-9 years editorial experience in an established newsroom;
  • Newsroom management experience would be preferential;
  • Experience in a digital environment would be an added advantage;
  • Thorough working knowledge of news production, media ethics and the media environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Edit submitted news copy to ensure it meets all quality benchmarks, is free of errors and meets the standards of the Press Code, all relevant legislation and News24’s style guide;
  • Rewrite intros and angles of news stories to make them more appealing for our readers;
  • Assist the head of news with identifying and evaluating national and regional news events and enterprise hard news and feature stories;
  • Assign stories to reporters and freelancers, briefing them clearly on the angle(s) of coverage;
  • Debrief reporters during or after the editing process, as deemed necessary;
  • Assist with producing a comprehensive daily news diary from our reporters in the coastal provinces;
  • Report and investigate news stories when necessary;
  • Keep abreast of local, provincial, national and important international news.
