Job description

Job Purpose To protect the environment and the communities of eThekwini Municipality from adverse effects of poor waste management, through an environmentally acceptable cost-effective and sustainable waste collection service.

Key Responsibility Areas

Co-ordinates the collection by the department of domestic, commercial, industrial, biohazardous and garden waste, all in a customer focused manner to ensure a clean and healthy environment.

Co-ordinates the solid waste collection and street sweeping / litter picking, illegal dumping and removal of informal shacks service.

Ensures the provision of vehicles and equipment required to efficiently perform solid waste collection and street sweeping tasks, investigating and making recommendations for new vehicles, ensuring regular checks on existing equipment is undertaken regularly.

Attends to and resolves internal and external queries, making recommendations for improvements where necessary.

Oversees the sectional administration functions.

Prepares contractual / technical documentation for publication and advertising as well as reports to Council with recommendations for acceptance.

Administers refuse collection contracts to ensure that specifications and standards are maintained, and where applicable, supervision of consultants.

Directs and controls the key performance indicators and outcomes of personnel.

Controls the departmental revenue, expenditure and capital budgets.

Assists the Head Cleansing and Solid Waste in formulating the strategic direction for the Unit and develops the department's strategic plan.

Implements the Departments plans and monitors and reviews the performance of the Department.

Essential Requirements

Bachelors Degree (NQF Level 7) in Operations Management or Environmental Management or Logistics Management or any other related and equivalent qualification.
