Job Title: Data Specialist

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a leading scientific and technology research organisation in South Africa, dedicated to developing and diffusing technologies that promote socio-economic prosperity. The CSIR contributes to industrial development and supports a capable state.

About the Position

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Data Specialist within the Coastal Engineering and Ports Infrastructure Research Group in the Smart Mobility Cluster. The successful candidate will be responsible for data management, processing, developing data-related products, and reporting. This position is based in Stellenbosch. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage databases, ensuring performance, integrity, and security of formal and informal databases.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of data management strategies within the Coastal Engineering and Ports Infrastructure group.
  • Establish and maintain stakeholder relationships.
  • Manage a small team.
  • Prepare reports and documentation to disseminate project results.
  • Monitor industry trends to keep the research group innovative and competitive.
  • Ensure project quality and timely delivery through technical reviews and quality assurance.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Honours degree in Computer Science or related IT field, specialising in databases, with at least five years of database administration experience.
  • Must be able to work independently and in teams, perform under pressure, and manage projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Self-motivated with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Windows and Ubuntu.
  • Skills required:
    • Problem solving and innovative thinking.
    • Attention to detail and quality.
    • Programming in Matlab, Python, Java, and PHP.
    • Expertise in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Apache, Tomcat, Java, HTML websites, and webpage development.
  • Valid driver's license and own transport.
