The Data Centre technician (electrical technician) provides a range of services which revolves around day-to-day operations & maintenance of the Data Centre facility, including, but not limited to, equipment and processes, ensuring effective and efficient operation of the Data Centre.

Purpose of the Role

The Data Centre technician (electrical technician) provides a range of services which revolves around day-to-day operations & maintenance of the Data Centre facility, including, but not limited to, equipment and processes, ensuring effective and efficient operation of the Data Centre.

Objectives

Main Function of the Job

  1. Monitoring and maintenance of all Data Centre critical infrastructure (generator, UPS, fire and cooling systems)
  2. Performing planned and preventative maintenance of all infrastructure
  3. Fault detection of critical infrastructure
  4. Switching and isolation of MV and LV equipment
  5. Installing and commissioning of new plant
  6. Daily walk arounds and inspections of electrical, mechanical (cooling) and fire systems and equipment
  7. Wiring of electrical control panels
  8. Offering technical support at Data Centre by performing system/network installation, configuration, and troubleshooting in order to ensure optimum operations.
  9. Monitoring system processes to ensure smooth operations.
  10. Evaluating heating and cooling systems to ensure they are operational and can meet equipment temperature conditions.
  11. Comply with working methods ensuring that all client SLA and MSA’s are achieved
  12. Monitor critical environments to ensure uptime and efficient resolution of issues.

Compliance

  1. Maintain compliance in accordance to all relative policies, procedures and legislative codes
  2. Meet agreed inter-departmental OLA (Operational Level Agreement)
  3. Health & Safety monitoring and corrective action to meet statutory compliance and company’s objective of zero tolerance to unsafe work practices.

Skill Requirements

  1. Good technical / electrical abilities
  2. Effective communication skills, active listener, ability to understand requirements and be able to explain complicated technical processes in a simple way to non-technical staff.
  3. Data Technicians often develop standard operating procedures and manuals for the networks they are in charge of.
  4. Proactive problem solver, perform rapid and accurate assessments
  5. Ability to work independently, as well as being a positive team player
  6. Self-motivated
  7. Conducts self professionally, exhibits elevated levels of tolerance and patience
  8. Responsible for continued learning and self-development
  9. Quick response to potentially critical situations
  10. Troubleshoot systems and components to identify root causes of failures
  11. Implement corrective actions promptly to mitigate the negative effects of system changes
  12. Good Microsoft Office skills.

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Red Seal Trade Tested Electrician OR National Diploma in electrical engineering
  2. A minimum of 2 years post qualification work experience
  3. Previous data centre experience would be advantageous
  4. Knowledge of Data Centre environments and critical infrastructure would be advantageous.
