Job description

A vacancy exists for a CSSD Assistant, based at Life Kingsbury Hospital, reporting to Michelle-Ann Du Toit, CSSD Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the correct packing and sterilization of instrument sets and linen packs for theatre and doctors’ rooms in accordance with company infection control standards.

Critical Outputs

1. To prepare sufficient instrument sets conforming to company standards
2. To ensure the correct application of sterile indicators and autoclave for maximum steam penetration
3. To check and prepare sets for sterilization
4. To control sufficient instrument sets

To prepare sufficient linen sets conforming to company standards

1. To conduct regular daily checks on linen levels and ensure there is sufficient linen available
2. Compile, sterilize, and store linen packs; implement corrective actions to problem areas

To ensure functional, maintained equipment according to legislative requirements

1. Conduct chemical, biological, and mechanical checks in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications
2. Document test results
3. Check and maintain heat sealing machine and clean washers in accordance with company specifications
4. Ensure timely repair of all equipment malfunctions
5. Ensure the full functioning and maintenance of the gas autoclave

To ensure efficient utilization of non-recoverable stock items

1. Review and prepare action plans to reduce costs appropriately for theatre staff

Requirements

• CSSD experience and training in the private hospital setting
• Matric
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience in packing of equipment
• Ability to work flexible hours
• Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments, and processes around cleaning of equipment
• Awareness of safety protocols
• Adherence to safe, standardized loading and unloading of autoclaves
