Job summary

A leading independent Jewish Day School in Cape Town seeks a full-time Counsellor to support the emotional and educational development of primary school pupils. The ideal candidate will be a registered professional with experience in childhood counselling, able to implement behavior management programs and promote social-emotional learning in the classroom. This position involves working closely with pupils and collaborating with colleagues and parents to ensure holistic development.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years’ experience working with children aged 6-12.
  • Knowledge of supportive education policy and practice.
  • Ability to create and manage supportive counselling interventions.

Job description

Full-time permanent post, starting 01 January 2026

United Herzlia Schools is a highly successful, independent, community Jewish Day School in Cape Town.
The Counsellor will be part of the Counselling and Learning Support team in our SEED (Supporting Emotional and Educational Development) Department and will be required to work with Primary school pupils from Grade 1 – 6.

  • Be a registered counsellor, psychologist or social worker.
  • Have at least 3 years’ experience working with children between 6 and 12 years of age and have a solid understanding of the relevant developmental phases.
  • Recognise childhood presenting problems and be able to assist in managing the impact thereof on learning, as well as on social and emotional development in the classroom.
  • Be able to implement behaviour management programs.
  • Work therapeutically and systemically with children both individually and in small groups.
  • Promote and drive social-emotional programs in the classroom.
  • Be comfortable with whole class instruction and support.
  • Support colleagues and parents in promoting the development of each child holistically.
  • Be able to create, manage and integrate supportive counselling interventions.
  • Have knowledge of inclusive and supportive education policy and practice.
  • Have excellent administrative and communication skills.
  • Be part of a multi-disciplinary professional counselling and academic support team.
