Job description

Department Description/Departement Beskrywing

Division Student Affairs

Centre for Student Life and Learning (CSLL)

Coordinator: Commuter Student Communities (Post Level 9)

(Stellenbosch Campus)

Ref. SS/091/0425

The Coordinator: Commuter Student Communities will work in the Unit for Commuter Student Communities (UCSC), which forms part of the Centre for Student Life and Learning (CSLL) in the Division Student Affairs at Stellenbosch University (SU). It is the primary belief of the CSLL that students' learning and living environments should be integrated and should not function separately. As such, various student communities form part of the SU cluster organisation principle. At SU, students belong to either a residential student community or a commuter student community.

The commuter student and residence student communities are student communities in which community principles are applied to integrate students¿ academic and living environments. The social dimension of community life in the University commuter student and residence student communities is harnessed to support the University's academic mission. In so doing, one of the University's objectives is pursued, namely to provide students with a university experience in which the commuter student and residence student communities are extensions of academic life in the faculties. The aim is to establish a university environment that would create a well-rounded educational experience for students in line with the Strategic Framework and the profile of SU graduates.

The UCSC is responsible for the welcoming, orientation, and intergration of commuter students into the SU campus-life ecosystem. The UCSC is responsible for the management and continued development of the eleven undergraduate commuter student communities (CSCs), as well as the three postgraduate commuter student communities (.Nets). This includes, but is not limited to, the election, training, and development of student leaders in the CSCs, as well as the administrative oversight of the commuter student community organisational model.

The Commuter Student Communities Unit (CSCU) within the Centre for Student Life and Learning (CSLL) is searching for a Coordinator: Commuter Student Communities (CSC). This position is essential for managing the CSC communities within clusters and improving the residential education (ResEd) experience for commuter students at the University. The primary goal is to ensure that every student is welcomed, oriented, and integrated into the Campus Life Ecosystem, fostering a transformative student experience aligned with SU's Vision 2040.

The CSC Coordinator's responsibilities include developing and coordinating support structures and administrative systems for commuter students, curating a welcoming programme to ensure students experience a sense of belonging at SU, and implementing innovative solutions to address time and space challenges. The incumbent must also creatively connect students to their communities.

Additionally, the Coordinator will collaborate with other coordinators in Student Affairs and the broader SU community, train and mentor student leaders, manage community spaces, and facilitate collaborations with commuter student structures locally and internationally.

Afdeling Studentesake

Sentrum vir Studentelewe en -leer (SSLL)

Koördineerder: Pendelstudentegemeenskappe (Posvlak 9)

(Stellenbosch-kampus)

Verw. SS/091/0425
