Job summary

Qualifications

  • Must have valid SAMSA medical certificate.
  • Efficient Cook Certificate required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan meals for a 2-week period and prepare meals for the crew.
  • Supervise the kitchen area and maintain hygiene standards.
  • Perform stock takes and manage deliveries.

Job description

To plan and prepare nutritious meals for the dredger crew and to ensure the safe and economical operation of the catering services function of the craft.

Position Outputs
  • Plan meals for a 2-week period.
  • Draw up menus.
  • Prepare meals economically and set up the mess room for meals.
  • Supervise and clean catering area, equipment, stores, and fridges.
  • Perform stock takes and present requirements to the Master.
  • Check deliveries (quantities & quality) and store accordingly.
  • Replenish store items.
  • Ensure safe stowage of stores.
  • Supervise stewards.
  • Maintain hygienic conditions of catering areas.
  • Ensure cleanliness and punctuality.
  • Prepare meals to ensure a well-nourished crew.
  • Serve meals on time.
  • Consider cultural differences and religious beliefs when preparing meals.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Grade 12
  • Efficient Cook Certificate of Competence
  • SAMSA medical certificate - valid
  • STCW compliant – ancillary courses
  • Minimum 6 months experience working as a cook onboard a vessel, or
  • Minimum 1 year experience working as a cook onboard a vessel
