Daily Sun is a digital-only news brand with a strong digital presence across multiple platforms. We are seeking a talented and creative Content Manager with exceptional graphic design skills to join our digital team and elevate our visual storytelling across our digital platforms.

The Content Manager - Graphics will play a pivotal role in our digital strategy, combining content management with advanced graphic design expertise to create visually compelling and engaging digital experiences. The ideal candidate will have strong graphic design capabilities and a creative vision that can transform our editorial content into visually stunning digital presentations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Graphic Design & Visual Content
  • Design impactful and eye-catching visuals for the website and our social media platforms
  • Create cohesive visual identities for editorial content and campaigns, including logo design
  • Develop engaging and interactive web content using Shorthand for editorial project stories
  • Transform written content into visually appealing digital experiences that resonate with our audience
  • Stay current with design trends and technology, including AI, to enhance creative output
  • Apply design principles to improve user experience and engagement across all digital platforms
  • Create custom graphics to enhance storytelling and audience engagement

Content Management and Optimisation
  • Sub-edit content in adherence to South African media law and the Press Code
  • Write creative, tabloid-style and SEO-based headlines
  • Extract relevant SEO keywords from content
  • Write appropriate and creative captions for all story elements
  • Ensure content pieces flow in a sensible and engaging way
  • Add appropriate photographic, audio, video and info-box content when creating stories
  • Publish content to website
  • Use analytics tools to guide decision-making with regards to publishing schedules and ranking stories on the website
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
Graphic Design Expertise
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Canva
  • Excellent layout and design capabilities with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to create visually compelling and on-brand graphics that enhance storytelling
  • Strong understanding of colour theory and visual hierarchy
  • Experience with digital design tools and interactive content creation platforms like Shorthand
  • Ability to adapt design style to different content types while maintaining brand consistency
  • Creative problem-solving skills to overcome design challenges
Content Creation and Editing
  • Excellent sub-editing skills
  • Exceptional headline writing skills
  • An understanding of SEO keywords and optimisation techniques
  • A flair for narrative storytelling
  • Creativity and a sense of humor
  • An understanding of the Daily Sun audience and their interests
Technical Knowledge
  • An understanding of South African media law, ethics, and the Press Code
  • Proficiency in Content Management Systems (CMS), Adobe Creative Suite and Canva
  • Understanding of Google Analytics
  • The ability to work independently to a high degree of accuracy

REQUIREMENTS
  • Relevant diploma or degree in journalism, graphic design or related field
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a sub-editor, digital content manager or graphic designer with a strong portfolio showing versatile design capabilities
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Canva, CMS, and Google Analytics
  • Knowledge of the online environment and the Daily Sun audience
  • Understanding of the South African media landscape
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends and public holidays on a shift basis
  • Must submit a strong design portfolio demonstrating versatility, creativity, and visual storytelling skills
