Purpose of the position:

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role within project delivery, ensuring that construction requirements are met across all sites so that customers identify Proconics as a trusted and critical partner to their business. You will ensure that the multidisciplinary engineering and design intent is being carried through the construction phase, supporting safe and successful construction completion, and ensuring sign-off commissioning and start-up success. The major responsibilities of this position are to plan and execute multidisciplinary construction projects and oversee their progress along the way in a timely and cost-effective manner within the contract requirements. You will be responsible for the onsite safety compliance, budgeting, organizing, implementation, and scheduling of the projects. You will be responsible to manage direct reports: supervisors, safety officers & environmental officers as well as any subcontractors appointed to assist in completing the works safely, within budget, on schedule and delivering a high standard.

Qualifications/Experience:
  • Technical diploma with relevant trade test, (MUST)
  • Registered Professional Construction Manager (PrCM) or Construction Project Manager (PrCPM) with SACPCMP (MUST)
  • 5+ years’ experience as a Construction Manager (multidisciplinary with a strong competency on electrical and instrumentation scopes of work) in Petrochemical/Energy sector with a proven track record with relevant working experience,
  • Experience in the Sasol environment and processes (Advantage)
  • Strong competency in MV and LV switchgear replacements,
  • As the CR 8(1) appointee to have zero tolerance towards unsafe construction sites, acts, hazards, and a passion for a zero-harm culture through safe construction solutions,
  • Understanding of all the different construction process and phases,
  • Familiarity with software packages such as, MS Office, MS Projects,
  • Good knowledge of the New Engineering Contracts (NEC3) Engineering and Construction Contracts (ECC) types of contracts,
  • Ability to plan proactively towards achieving the “big picture”,
  • Competent in conflict and crisis management skills,
  • Leadership and human resources planning and management skills,
  • Knowledge of Brownfields, Greenfields and multidisciplinary construction challenges,
  • Knowledge of applicable construction codes, standards, and regulations,
  • Ability to work across disciplines, have excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others,
  • Willing to work long hours and get the work done on short notice,
  • Adaptable to time frame changes in schedules,
  • Able to think fast on your feet,
  • Willing to work in challenging environments,
  • Must be able to construct safe and fit for purpose solutions to clients to create long-term relationships.

  • Willing to relocate to Secunda, Mpumalanga as well as managing sites within the larger ProGroup.
Required Outputs and Responsibilities:
  • The Construction Manager will report to the Senior Manager: Construction Management, and the corresponding Project Managers (Project),
  • Legal responsibilities as per Construction Regulations (CR) 8.1 (core) and/or 8.2,
  • Oversee and direct construction projects from initial phase to completion,
  • Assist Senior Manager: Construction Management to develop and implement construction management processes and procedures based on industry best practices,
  • Review the project in-depth to schedule activities and estimate cost,
  • Oversee all onsite and offsite construction to monitor compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations,
  • Technical queries to be addressed and resolved with the technical design team in collaboration with the service providers,
  • Plan, coordinate, direct and manage construction workers and subcontractors,
  • Identify risks/ hazards and assess safeness of work sites/ area to ensure safety of people and property, communicate such and keep records thereof,
  • Construction site housekeeping and day-to-day site operational duties,
  • Evaluate vendor proposals for bid clarifications,
  • Meet contractual obligations of performance,
  • Professional Client / Stakeholder engagement,
  • Develop and track daily construction activities in line with the Proconics CM process and procedures,
  • Develop and track two-week look ahead and review the work progress,
  • Prepare internal and external reports pertaining to job status,
  • Plan to prevent problems and resolve any emerging ones pro-actively,
  • Negotiate terms of agreements of construction and obtain permits
