Job description

Our Client supports and promotes research and human capital development through funding, the provision of research facilities, and science outreach platforms and programmes across all fields of science and technology, including natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities.

They lead South Africa's activities in engineering, science, and construction. The CI Storage and Delivery Lead role involves technical leadership, architecture, and research for the organisation's specialised infrastructure and programmes. Key responsibilities include developing and managing server and storage hardware, science archives, data transfer systems, tape libraries, and database services. The lead will also oversee the operation and uptime of these systems and collaborate with international consortia in this niche industry.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Work with the science team to develop, design, and review the organisation's data lifecycle management policy.
  • Ensure the technical storage solutions align with the data lifecycle management policy and processes.
  • Drive and be accountable for implementing activities to align storage solutions with the data lifecycle management policy.
  • Lead data storage, archival, and backup processes to ensure continuous availability and preservation of High-Sensitivity Detection System (observation) data.
  • Collaborate with operations leads to support and respond to technical issues during storage system operations.
  • Implement monitoring, early warning, and logging solutions for storage systems.
  • Manage storage solution change rollouts, ensuring stakeholders are informed and capable of utilising updates.
  • Chart the technical research path regarding high capacity, high availability, and long-term archival storage within the organisation.
  • Support the development and maintenance of System Engineering deliverables such as documentation and system verification activities.
  • Assist with CI Storage administration.
  • Develop and maintain data delivery policies and processes for the High-Sensitivity Detection System data.
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining robust data delivery infrastructure for the system.

Qualification Requirements :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Relevant storage certification.

Experience Requirements :

  • At least 10 years in system design, architecture, and analysis with a focus on storage.
  • Experience with large-scale storage implementations and deployments, performing at petascale.
  • Experience with CEPH (advantageous).
  • Extensive experience in high-performance computing development environments.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and managing large-scale storage deployments (>20 PB).
  • Experience with diverse and layered storage architectures, including high availability, high-speed, and cold storage solutions.
  • Experience in system engineering-driven environments.
  • Proven ability to develop innovative solutions and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Experience working on globally distributed projects.
  • Experience in technical team management and working with senior management.

Knowledge Required :

  • Understanding of budgets, resources, funding, and financial management procedures.
  • Strong background in computing infrastructure.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for complex information.
