Job description

Background :

  • The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges
  • It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology

Main purpose of the job :

  • Support study recruitment, retention and study literacy
  • Location :

  • Wits RHI – 22 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg
  • Key performance areas :

    Support Study Recruitment :

  • Promote studies and recruit participants
  • Address potential participants in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • Inform willing participants that participation in the study is voluntary
  • Address relevant concerns and misconceptions about the study
  • Schedule appointment / s with eligible participants to attend further screening at study clinic
  • Contact participants prior to their scheduled visits to remind them of their visit
  • Support Study Retention :

  • Prepare list of home visits according to priority and living area
  • Contact participants telephonically to reschedule visits
  • Accompany research staff to the dwellings or clinics
  • Conduct counselling sessions with participants to ensure retention
  • Support participant surveys
  • Support translations
  • Support Research Literacy :

  • Conduct study awareness sessions in waiting areas
  • Support focus groups / interviews / translation if needed
  • Promote research within the community and community structures
  • Effective Self-Management :

  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in on-going training anddevelopment activities such as forums, conferences, policy setting workshops etc
  • Required minimum education and training :

  • Grade 12
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Fluent in English and other African languages (Sesotho and Zulu preferable)
  • Required minimum work experience :

  • Minimum 2 years working experience
  • Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities :

  • Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Empathetic with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
  • Able to work independently and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
