Job Description Summary

The Community Health unit strives to improve access, health equity and patient outcomes in a sustainable way in countries around the world. The Community Health Lead, South Africa is responsible for co-designing and driving the implementation of a local Breast Cancer (BC) Community Health model in partnership with the Novartis International Country Organization. This includes establishing a deep understanding of the local oncology ecosystem in the public sector, including understanding of provincial variability, working closely with local partners and stakeholders to co-design effective breast cancer interventions and driving implementation, whilst working collaboratively with the local Country Organization and Global Health.

Job Description

Major accountabilities:

  • Program Design and Management: Drive end-to-end process for local program scoping, design & implementation – in close alignment with Country Organization and Global Health teams. This includes identifying key internal and external oncology priorities (specific focus on both metastatic breast cancer, paving pathway for interventions and/or improved outcomes in early BC), supporting the design of interventions, identifying key partners, establishing M&E frameworks and managing project workplan/timelines. Once launched, work with partners to drive operational excellence, setting expectations, problem solving and effectively monitoring progress and impact.
  • Access Solution Development: In close partnership with Country Organization and local partners, co-develop product access strategies for improved access to innovation/SOC treatment. Support business case development including sales/patient reach and investment assessment. Drive, build-up & management of local GH and/or 3rd party resources as needed for execution.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Partnership Development: Collaborate with a broad network of stakeholders to support co-designing of initiatives, key policy changes and advisory for NHI reforms for oncology practice and to build local capacity for long-term impact. Work effectively with internal cross-functional teams/resources as needed (e.g., Public Sector and oncology TA/Commercial, V&A, Finance, Medical, P&O, Public Affairs, Legal/ERC).
  • Impact Evaluation and Communication: Support design of monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track the impact and effectiveness. Own local monitoring of program KPIs. Use data and evidence to inform decision-making for key policy changes and advisories for oncology practice and possible NHI reforms, identify areas for improvement, and document success stories. Consider local requirements for data collection methodology and analysis as evidence change.

Key performance indicators:

  • Successful implementation of Community Health Model in line with plan and within the anticipated timelines.
  • Successful partnerships with local stakeholders and positioning of Community Health Model as a trusted approach to improving population health
  • Identification of sustainability pathways for impactful interventions
  • Feedback from internal/external partners on effective communication and perceived success of program

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Advanced Degree in business, economics, public health, engineering, medicine or relevant experience in Global Health innovation and/or global health entrepreneurship

Languages: English – fluent oral and written

  • Excellent project management skills, strong presentation skills and data-driven/quantitative mindset
  • Preference for experience designing and implementing health system strengthening programs, and/or access/commercial or policy efforts (e.g. innovative access models, policy/advocacy initiatives, patient support program, etc.)
  • Experience in oncology and/or NCD/chronic disease space preferred
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, ability to form trusted relationships easily and bring diverse experiences and backgrounds together effectively
  • Flexible and learning mind-set, able to work in multiple technical and therapeutic areas in parallel
