A leading NGO based in South Africa is seeking a Communications Coordinator to enhance their media presence and implement communication strategies. The successful candidate will coordinate internal and external communications, engage with various stakeholders, and contribute to the organization's mission of advancing environmental and social justice. The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) is seeking a Communications Coordinator to provide comprehensive support to our Communications and Media department.
The role involves carrying out various duties and functions to support the successful implementation of the Centre's communication plans and strategic objectives.
We are looking for a competent individual who thrives in identifying communication opportunities and who can distil complex information into curated digital storytelling.
Reporting to the Head of Communications, the successful candidate needs to be highly skilled and organised, flexible and able to facilitate running multiple internal and external communications activities, manage a busy activity calendar, and in coordinating commitments with different teams, partners and stakeholders.
This role will also handle several administrative responsibilities.

Qualifications, skills and experienceA degree in communications, journalism or similar level of certificate qualificationsAt least 3-5 years' practical experience as a communications coordinator or similar capacityFluent in written and spoken English; fluency in Nguni language an advantageExcellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across the organisationPositive attitude, excellent networking skills, and strong capabilities in building support among a wide range of stakeholdersWell-organised, disciplined, capable of working independently with minimal supervision; an agile team player and can efficiently handle multiple tasksA proactive self-starter with attention to detail, able to meet deadlines and committed to providing high-quality media support and client serviceTech-savvy, proficient in MS Office Suite with experience in the use Cloud and digital applications like SharePoint database, Google cloud applications, MS Teams, Adobe suite, and Canva.Experience in developing content for multiple social media platformsAvailable to travel occasionallyKey responsibilitiesTeam and admin support : Provide support and assistance to the Head of Communications in coordinating the day-to-day activities such as meetings, updating calendars, ensuring deliverables by monitoring commitments and project outcomes.
Collaborate with internal staff / teams and external partners or stakeholders; attend to various administrative responsibilities such as travel plans, procurement and payment of invoices, monitoring service level agreements; help maintain the comms department files, records, databases and archives, ensure compliance to CER's various policies and procedures; etc.Stakeholder and media engagement : To meticulously support the planning and implementation of CER's communication strategy.
Coordinate the preparation, communication and implementation of various organisational public-facing events, media roundtables and CER partner activities.
Proactively attend to media enquiries and disseminate media releases according to CER's communication and media protocols.
Track media coverage timeously and update media lists.
Assist in the development of public relations material such as press releases and coordinate the facilitation of media interviews with relevant CER spokespeople.Reporting, monitoring, and evaluation : Support the production of various periodic reports according to identified outcomes including monthly, quarterly, annual and risk management reports.Internal communications : Contribute to the development and strengthening of CER's internal communications to foster positive organisational culture; support training staff members in improving relevant communication skills; assist CER in the development of content for internal and external audiences such as newsletters and periodic updates; etc.Transformation : Participate and contribute towards the Centre's ongoing diversity, inclusion and transformation objectives not only around the areas of communications and media but helping grow our support of Black and women-owned suppliers and service providers along our overarching commitment as an organisation towards transformation.The salary range for the position is between R – R (total cost to company).
The salary offered will be dependent on factors that include the qualifications, level of expertise, and experience of the successful candidate.
The salary package includes medical aid and pension subsidies.
