Job description

SA Canegrowers has two vacancies for Commercial Manager: AgriEconomics. One position is based in Eston, KwaZulu Natal, and the other in Komatipoort (Komati), Mpumalanga.

Both roles report to the Grower Affairs Manager of SA Canegrowers.

Ideal candidates will have solid experience in a financial or agricultural economic field, with strong numerical skills and a forward-thinking mindset. We seek individuals eager to find innovative solutions and contribute actively to our Cane Growers' business.

The positions involve interaction with various stakeholders, including SA Canegrowers and Commercial Growers, managing diverse projects from inception to completion, with some background in negotiations. Knowledge of agriculture, such as sugar or tree farming, and sound financial and economic skills are essential.

Candidates should have experience working independently within established frameworks, be self-driven, resilient, team-oriented, and possess a positive attitude.

As a Commercial Manager, your responsibilities include:
  1. Driving and contributing to strategic issues involving Local Grower Councils, Mill Group Boards, and other committees.
  2. Addressing challenges faced by Cane Growers, from government workshops to income generation strategies.
  3. Supporting Grower leadership with meeting preparations.
  4. Managing diverse projects aligned with local strategic needs.
  5. Providing updates on industrial, economic, and institutional matters at local meetings.
  6. Offering services to Growers, including feasibility reports, budgets, crop valuations, and lease agreements.
  7. Participating in municipal activities like development plans.
  8. Overseeing development projects funded by government or companies.
  9. Advising on crop diversification and farm/business matters, collaborating with commodity organizations.
  10. Managing staff such as the Agriculture Business Advisor, ensuring excellent administration.
Requirements include:
  • BCom or relevant Business/Financial/Agricultural Economics Degree.
  • Grade 12 Core Mathematics.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a business-focused environment, preferably in agriculture like sugar or trees.
  • Experience in energy generation is advantageous.
  • Self-driven problem solver, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, outgoing, able to build relationships.
  • Ethical, service-oriented, innovative, resilient, team player, capable of independent work.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and technical skills.
  • Fluency in English and Afrikaans required for the Komati position.
