Job description

We are searching for a rare kind of commercial leader. someone who knows how to navigate complex regulatory landscapes, close high-value energy deals, and build strategic partnerships within South Africa’s broader public and semi-public sectors.

This role requires someone with a deep understanding of South Africa’s energy landscape, including third-party energy supply, energy wheeling, and trading. The ideal candidate will be comfortable leading engagements across public entities and regulated market structures, with the commercial skill set to structure, negotiate, and close complex transactions.

Key Responsibilities:

Market & Opportunity Analysis

  • Conduct research into procurement processes, market needs, and regulatory frameworks across the public sector
  • Identify and evaluate high-potential market entry points for energy trading and supply

Business Planning & Strategy Development

  • Develop strategic business cases outlining commercial, operational, and financial viability
  • Translate insights into actionable go-to-market strategies

Stakeholder & Partnership Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with key decision-makers, policy influencers, and energy officials across government-linked institutions
  • Engage with relevant industry bodies and regulatory stakeholders to build support for market access and participation

Product & Solution Development

  • Collaborate internally to shape energy supply solutions tailored to public-sector-connected customers and infrastructure
  • Identify and pursue partnership opportunities that support scalable delivery of wheeling and trading models

Regulatory & Compliance Management

  • Track policy developments, regulatory shifts, and compliance requirements affecting energy supply in regulated environments
  • Contribute to advocacy efforts and assist with submissions to relevant authorities

Sales & Business Development Execution

  • Lead commercial engagements, respond to procurement opportunities, and structure high-value agreements
  • Negotiate complex energy supply arrangements, including Public-Private Partnerships where applicable

Performance Tracking and Reporting

  • Monitor engagement activity, regulatory milestones, and deal pipeline progress
  • Report on revenue potential, competitor insights, and stakeholder feedback to senior leadership

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with legal, policy, trading, and product development teams to ensure commercial solutions align with broader strategy
  • Support integrated execution of sales and solution delivery

Innovation & Industry Best Practices

  • Track global and local trends in renewable energy and public-private energy solutions
  • Integrate emerging best practices to continuously improve strategy and execution

Experience and Skills Required:

  • 7–10+ years in energy sales, infrastructure development, or public sector business development
  • Proven experience in complex dealmaking within regulated or government-linked environments
  • Deep knowledge of South Africa’s energy landscape, including procurement, trading, and wheeling mechanisms
  • Skilled in engaging with regulatory and compliance frameworks
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management capabilities
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Business, Engineering, Public Policy, Energy Economics); postgraduate qualification preferred
