Job description

Position: Clinical and Radiation Oncologist

Location: East London

Organisation: Cancercare

Main Purpose of Role:

The primary purpose of an Clinical and Radiation Oncologist is to diagnose, manage, and treat patients with cancer through the use of medical, radiation, or surgical oncology techniques. They develop personalised treatment plans based on the type and stage of cancer, monitor patient progress, and adjust therapies as needed to achieve the best possible outcomes. Oncologists also play a vital role in providing emotional support, guiding patients through complex treatment journeys, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring evidence-based, compassionate care throughout all stages of the disease.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Patient Care & Clinical Duties

  • Manage and treat new oncology referrals; conduct initial assessments and develop treatment plans.
  • Oversee radiation therapy planning, including delineation, volume definition, and approval of RT plans.
  • Monitor patients undergoing treatment; ensure weekly reviews and manage side effects in collaboration with the medical team.
  • Provide follow-up care post-treatment, evaluate outcomes, and coordinate re-referrals or shared follow-up as appropriate.

2. Inpatient & Emergency Care

  • Ensure all hospitalised oncology patients are reviewed daily, either personally or in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Be available for after-hours emergencies and inpatient consultations when required.

3. Chemotherapy Management

  • Assess patients receiving chemotherapy; review blood results, performance status, and treatment-related toxicity.
  • Sign off on continuation of chemotherapy and ensure patients are clinically fit for treatment.

4. Administration & Communication

  • Maintain clear communication with referring specialists and GPs.
  • Complete all required documentation including SAOC/ICON submissions, medical aid motivations, medico-legal and insurance reports.
  • Participate in internal unit meetings, review clinical results, and contribute to discussions on operational performance and unit profitability.

5. Clinical Governance & Development

  • Participate in combined clinics and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Contribute to expanding Cancercare’s clinical footprint and influence.
  • Attend industry events and Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions to stay updated with oncology advancements.

6. Values-Based Practice

  • Demonstrate a positive, collaborative attitude in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Show flexibility to support operational needs beyond core responsibilities, where required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education:
  • MBChB with MMed or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • FCRad (Onc) qualification will be an advantage.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 4 years post-qualification experience in clinical and radiation oncology.
  • Professional Registration:
  • Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
  • Medical indemnity cover preferred.
