Job description

Clinical Fellow in Community Paediatrics

This is a fixed-term post (6 months) for a Clinical Fellow in Community Paediatrics with East London NHS Foundation Trust within the Specialist Children & Young People's Services (SCYPS) in Newham, East London.

This post would be suitable for an Out-of-programme Paediatric trainee or SAS Doctor looking to expand their portfolio to gain clinical experience in Community Paediatrics.

The work will include Child Protection medicals, Children in Care medicals, and Developmental screening clinics.

There will also be opportunities to undertake quality improvement and service development, and to develop paediatric education, clinical management, and leadership skills.

Main duties of the job
  1. Diagnostic assessments: a. To participate in the Child Protection rota for triaging referrals and undertaking Child Protection medical assessments.
  2. To undertake Health Assessments for Looked After Children and Young People.
  3. To participate in Child protection conferences and Looked After Children Review Meetings with colleagues in the multi-agency team in Newham.
  4. Developmental assessments in the "DAC" clinic - the initial clinic for new referrals.
  5. EHCP telephone screening and face-to-face clinics to write reports contributing to EHCP assessments.
Teaching
  1. To contribute to departmental teaching.
  2. To contribute to teaching of students, particularly in relation to community child health services.
Audit, Quality Improvement, and Service Improvement
  1. To engage in departmental projects and initiatives to improve services, clinical practice, and protocols related to Safeguarding and Looked After Children.
Management

To participate in management roles within the team, such as teaching coordination, chairing team meetings, and rota coordination.

Other Clinical Opportunities

Initially observing in more complex neurodevelopmental clinics to support the consultant, with the opportunity to see children individually as the post progresses.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP / MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Eligible for full UK GMC registration and Licence to Practise
  • Postgraduate degree in related child health or medical specialty, e.g., DCH, MSC, MD, PhD

Professional training

  • Post-graduate experience in Paediatrics (at least 1 year)
  • Clinical experience in community paediatrics
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary service
  • Ability to assess children with child protection concerns
  • Up-to-date Level 3 Safeguarding Children competencies
  • At least 6 months NHS paediatrics experience
  • Experience working with Education, Social Care, and other stakeholders
  • Competent in child development assessments
  • Experience managing common paediatric problems
  • Leadership and medical management skills
  • Effective administrative skills and good organizational and time management
  • Reliability and punctuality

Patient safety and Quality Improvement

  • Experience in audit, service development, or Quality Improvement projects
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance

Teaching and training

  • Experience in team teaching and postgraduate paediatric education
  • Completed 'train the trainer' training

Communication and interpersonal skills

  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to explain complex issues clearly
