Qualifications

• Must possess a Code 08 Driver's License.
• Three years' experience sailing as a Chief Mate.
• Knowledge of DGPS navigational systems.

Represent the Master in overall charge of the ship, ensuring safe handling, manoeuvring and navigation as per International Maritime Organisation statutes.

Maintain an effective dredge operation, optimising resource utilisation while ensuring maximum dredging output and crew safety.

• Direct daily dredge operations, methods of dredging and vessel navigation to ensure a safe, efficient and effective dredge operation.
• Monitor deck maintenance, load line and LSA equipment schedules to ensure seaworthiness and compliance with international regulations.
• Collaborate with the Chief Engineer to effect repairs and minimise breakdown time.
• Oversee quality control and safety aspects of specific repairs and maintenance.
• Train allocated deck personnel.
• Prepare and record documents related to production, timecards, maintenance and breakdowns.
• Take on Masters legal responsibilities and accountabilities in his absence.

Qualifications and Experience

Grade 12, S4 Marine Studies, STCW 95 Certificate of Competency Chief Mate, issued by the South African Maritime Safety Authority. Three years' experience sailing as a Chief Mate, Code 08 Driver's License.

Knowledge: Employee relations, computer literacy, DGPS navigational systems.

Skills: Ship handling experience, leadership qualities, communication skills.
