Job title: Chief Marketing Officer

Reporting to: Chief Growth Officer

Location: Cape Town (Hybrid)

OVERALL PURPOSE

We’re looking for an experienced and dynamic Chief Marketing Officer to lead our brand, performance and product initiatives.

The role requires a strategic, collaborative and hands-on leader who can effectively work with others to craft and execute marketing strategies that drive awareness, consideration, and conversion while aligning with our core brand values.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping Lula’s market positioning and ensuring our products resonate deeply with SMEs. By leveraging your expertise, you’ll help us amplify our impact, fostering meaningful connections with South African Business Owners.

As the Chief Marketing Officer at Lula, your role will involve:

Brand Marketing

  • Develop and execute brand strategies that position Lula as the leading fintech partner for SMEs.
  • Ensure brand consistency across all customer touchpoints and communication channels.
  • Lead initiatives that build brand awareness, trust, and long-term affinity.

Performance Marketing

  • Own and execute Lula’s performance marketing strategy across paid channels, including channels such as Google, Meta, and LinkedIn.
  • Develop and optimise CRM strategies across email, push notifications, and other direct channels.
  • Manage the performance marketing budget and forecasting to drive efficient and scalable growth.

Product Marketing

  • Lead go-to-market strategies for new product launches, ensuring alignment with customer needs and business priorities.
  • Partner with product teams to define messaging, positioning, and value propositions.
  • Drive product adoption and retention through targeted, insight-led campaigns.

Content Marketing & Community Management

  • Develop content strategies that inform, inspire, and engage Lula’s core audiences.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of high-quality content across blogs, social media, email, and owned channels.
  • Use storytelling to clearly articulate Lula’s value proposition and mission.

Strategy & Insights

  • Use customer insights, market research, and performance data to shape strategy and campaigns.
  • Track, measure, and report on key marketing metrics—driving continuous optimisation.
  • Build data-driven marketing plans to deliver against KPIs across awareness, consideration, and conversion.

Leadership

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing, multidisciplinary marketing team.
  • Foster strong collaboration across product, sales, customer success, and leadership teams.
  • Champion a culture of creativity, accountability, and continuous learning.

THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Grade 12 achieved
  • Degree in relevant field would be highly advantageous
  • Proven experience (7+ years) in marketing, with a strong focus on brand, performance, content, and product marketing.
  • Experience working in the SME or finance space is highly desirable.
  • Experience and knowledge in the use of martech tools (Segment, Iterable, etc.).
  • Experience in attribution tracking and modelling.
  • Track record of creating high-impact strategies that drive awareness, consideration, and conversion.
  • Strong analytical capability with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building abilities.
  • Superior communication skills, with an aptitude for storytelling and persuasive messaging.
