Job summary

Boardroom Appointments is seeking a Head of IRB Model Development in Sandton to define the strategic vision and lead a high-performing team of risk model developers and quantitative analysts.

You will develop regulatory and economic credit risk capital models, collaborate across risk, finance, IT, and other business units, and ensure governance, validation, and regulatory alignment. Stay at the forefront of modelling developments and provide strategic guidance to the organisation.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a highly quantitative field with strong academic performance.
  • 10+ years' experience in credit risk modelling teams.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing teams, projects, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience leading an organisation through transformational change.
  • Strong background in risk modelling, statistical analysis, and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SAS, MATLAB, C++).
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements, especially IRB, and full model lifecycle.
  • Certifications such as FRM, CFA, or PRM are advantageous.
  • Experience with version control tools or cloud platforms (GitHub/Azure DevOps) or willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Define the strategic vision and roadmap for modelling of regulatory and economic credit risk capital.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team of risk model developers and quantitative analysts.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement a comprehensive regulatory and economic credit risk capital model development framework.
  • Ensure design and development of PD, EAD models and other risk components.
  • Collaborate with IT, data teams, Risk, Finance, and Business Units to integrate models into risk management.
  • Maintain governance, validation, and reporting processes for model risk.
  • Stay ahead of regulatory changes and advances in credit risk modelling.
