We are currently looking to employ an experienced Chief Engineer (>2000KW FISHING) to join our fleet operating out of Saldanha Bay on the West Coast.
Position Details
- Position: Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
- Reporting To: FAS Superintendent
Purpose
To ensure fully operational vessels operating safely and effectively in accordance with SAMSA and other related Maritime Regulations and company policies.
Key Performance Areas
- Repairs and Maintenance
- Ensure that the vessel is mechanically able to remain at sea for the full voyage without unnecessary port returns for repairs.
- Implement preventative maintenance procedures for all equipment and ensure repairs are satisfactory.
- Inform the Skipper and Superintendent promptly of any performance changes requiring immediate action or investigation.
- Ensure availability of correct spare parts to maintain efficiency during sailing.
- Operations, Watchkeeping, and Bunkering
- Ensure machinery functions effectively during sailing and trawling.
- Maintain hold temperatures at specified levels.
- Adhere to recognized watchkeeping practices.
- Load correct grades of fuel and lubrication oils.
- Administration
- Ensure engineering stores requirements are adequate for each trip.
- Maintain proper documentation as per SAMSA & Company requirements.
- Inform engine room staff of operating procedures.
- Update the planned maintenance system.
- Standards and Safety
- Take responsibility for the safety of engine room staff and machinery.
- Ensure staff are familiar with emergency procedures and safety practices.
- Ensure operations comply with environmental regulations.
- Represent the Engineering Department during safety surveys and investigations.
- Management and Training
- Develop skills and confidence of officers through training.
- Manage discipline and handle grievances according to policies.
- Assess subordinates and cadets regularly.
Qualifications, Experience & Competencies
- Valid Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer (>2000KW Fishing)
- Valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- Valid STCW documentation
- At least 3 years' experience as Second Engineer (unlimited)
- Experience as Chief Engineer (unlimited) is advantageous.
- Technical and problem-solving skills.
- Personnel management and safety awareness.
- Technical report writing skills.
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
- Ability to follow company instructions and procedures.
