Job Description

The Chemist will be responsible for analyzing samples accurately and efficiently, adhering to relevant Test Method Instructions. The role involves assisting the Section Manager to ensure compliance with the SGS Laboratory Quality Manual and Health and Safety procedures.

Technical Responsibilities
  • Analyze all samples using correct procedures and methods.
  • Monitor the technical accuracy of results, take remedial actions when necessary, and record data.
  • Update internal findings, improvement requests, and keep minutes of meetings.
  • Generate reports detailing analytical results, including opinions and interpretations.
  • Verify instruments and assist with their maintenance.
  • Calibrate and perform minor maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Identify biases and QC issues early, communicate findings to the Section Manager.
  • Diagnose suspect results and help rectify equipment or analytical problems.
  • Address client complaints.
  • Authorize and validate new methods under supervision.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Calculate and report test results within specified timeframes.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to the Section Manager.
  • Transfer data to SLIMS and ensure all data is traceable and stored properly.
  • Record and file all equipment and analytical data for quality purposes.
  • Dispose of samples appropriately.
  • Verify results against control samples and re-analyze when necessary.
General Duties
  • Assist with gas cylinder changes and equipment maintenance.
  • Oversee cleaning of the laboratory and work areas.
  • Ensure compliance with quality procedures and health and safety regulations.
  • Perform duties across relevant workstations as required, including overtime when needed.
  • Participate in training new staff and operational projects.
  • Follow risk control and safety protocols.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the line manager.
Supervisory and Production Responsibilities
  • Assist with staff training and control shift attendance.
  • Plan leave to minimize overtime.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels.
Qualifications
Education
  • National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
  • BTech Chemistry or BSc Chemistry is an advantage.
Experience
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in an analytical chemistry lab.
  • Experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
  • Supervisory experience is advantageous.
  • Proficiency with the SLIMS system.
