Job Description
The Chemist will be responsible for analyzing samples accurately, efficiently, and timely according to relevant Test Method Instructions. The role involves assisting the Section Manager to ensure compliance with the SGS Laboratory Quality Manual and Health and Safety procedures.
Technical Responsibilities
- Analyze all samples using correct procedures and methods.
- Monitor the technical accuracy of results, take remedial actions when necessary, and record data.
- Update internal findings, improvement requests, and document minutes of internal meetings.
- Generate reports detailing analytical results, including opinions and interpretations.
- Verify instruments and assist with their maintenance.
- Calibrate and perform minor maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Identify biases and QC issues early and communicate findings to the Section Manager.
- Diagnose suspect results and assist in resolving equipment or analytical issues.
- Address client complaints and validate new methods under supervision.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Calculate test results following standard formats and procedures.
- Report results within specified timeframes.
- Report malfunctioning equipment to the Section Manager.
- Transfer data from instruments to SLIMS and ensure traceability and proper storage.
- Record and file all equipment and analytical data for quality purposes.
- Dispose of samples properly.
- Verify results against control samples and re-analyze if necessary.
General Responsibilities
- Assist with gas cylinder changes and equipment maintenance.
- Oversee cleaning of the laboratory and work areas.
- Ensure compliance with quality and safety procedures.
- Perform duties across relevant workstations as required.
- Work overtime as needed and ensure smooth shift handovers.
- Support training of new staff and participate in operational projects.
- Follow risk control procedures and adhere to SGS safety standards.
Supervisory and Production Responsibilities
- Assist in training staff on new methods and procedures.
- Manage shift attendance and staffing levels.
- Plan leave to minimize overtime.
Qualifications
Education
- National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
- BTech or BSc in Chemistry is an advantage.
Experience
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory.
- Experience working in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
- Experience with instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
- Supervisory experience is advantageous.
- Proficiency with SLIMS system (administration & operation).
