Job description

As a Chargehand Welder, you will be responsible for leading a team of welders, ensuring that all welding tasks are completed to the highest standards of quality and safety. You will also be responsible for training and mentoring junior welders, troubleshooting welding issues, and maintaining welding equipment.

Qualifications / Experience :

  • Engineering Trade Certificate in Welding with min 5 years' experience SMWA / MMA, GMAW / FCAW / MIG MAG, GTAW / TIG and SAW experience
  • 5 years supervisory experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings (welding & machining symbols).
  • SAIW Welding Supervisors or welding co-ordinator Certification will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of OSH ACT.
  • Prepared to work extended hours and shifts.
  • Good understanding of AWS D1.1 and ISO 3834-2
  • Computer literate (MS Excel, Word & Project)
  • Ability to drive performance.

Duties :

  • Provide technical guidance and supervision of welding activities performed
  • Analyse weld repairs and give guidance for improvements to reduce the repair rates
  • Supervise sub-contractors and other labour workers
  • Maintain health and safety records
  • Job clocking and employee record keeping (hours)
  • Undertake the control and management of welding operations in association with QC and Production departments
  • Supervise welding activities & metallic construction activities performed at the plant for each project, through defining methods, procedures, deadlines, control specifications and working instructions with the assistance from other departments
  • Evaluate equipment, machinery and materials used for welding activities.
  • Assist with the selection & calculation of welding tools, materials and speed
  • Provide technical guidance for preparation of Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) following the specific requirements of each client, manufacturing plant and project
  • Assist in preparation of safe operating procedures and works instruction related to various welding activities
  • Continuously update welding procedures and welder performance records
  • Understand parameters, requirements, processes related to welding activities performed
  • Interpret drawings and define product standards
  • Provide training to welders in different materials and processes as per company requirements
  • Supervise staff for reporting, recording and inspection activities.
  • AD HOC duties as and when required.
